• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

So for starters my county had switched to a new radio system...

I bought a used radio off of the dreaded Ebay to give it a go... the radio is readable however it cannot be written to because the firmware is outdated for the current codeplug. I know nothing about EF Johnson radios.

This was sent to me from the radio tech at the 911 center:

Current Firmware in radio is 4.8.12.

Needs to be 6.16.x for us to write to it with the software we have.

Our codeplugs are built for firmware 6.16.x or newer.

Is there a simple fix to this or should I just sell the radio and buy a different one?

Well you can either upgrade the firmware or get PC Configure 2.10.x for your radio. They can't do it because they only have the most current software. 6.16.18 is the current firmware and 2.18.14 is the current version of PC Configure.

You will need PC Configure 2.10.x for the firmware you have in your radio. If you want to upgrade firmware the current firmware is 6.16.18 and the current version of PC Configure is 2.18.14. By upgrading firmware the county shop will be able to program the radio.

Do you know of anyone or any radio shops online that are able to upgrade the firmware? I'm assuming you need a cable and it's probably a serial cable. I don't have a serial port on my computer. There aren't any EF Johnson dealers or radio shops around here that deal with them.

Your series 4 radio cannot be upgraded to a series 6. Entirely different radio on the inside. FYI EFJ has are soon will be ending support for the series 4 radios.

Thanks for all your help guys! That's what I was afraid of. I didn't know much about EF Johnson. The price I paid for the radio was awesome and it does function properly. I'll just resale it.
