I just received my feature control upgrades for my Hytera PD782's to upgrade them to Full Encrypt.
Full encrypt adds the ability to use AES 128 or AES 256 and can even do random AES key encryption. I haven't tried random key yet, but I think it just involves setting 32 256 bit AES keys in CPS , selecting random key Enc, and writing the same keys to your other radios. The radio will then rotate AES keys each transmission.
My question is , has anyone confirmed that Hytera DMRA AES 256 will work with MotoTRBO AES-256?
I've read conflicting reports on this.
And no I don't use the ham bands, I used licensed business itinerate frequencies.
Just some info on Hytera DMR voice security, which seems to be way beyond anything Moto is offering:
Most Hytera DMR radios offer something for free called Basic encrypt. You can choose 40,128, or 256 bit Basic keys. This type of encryption does not use an IV so I imagine the key stream would be predictable. However in most circumstances it should be sufficient.
I tested a 40 bit Basic key against a similar 40 bit Basic key with 3 key value places being different and some voice intelligibility could be made out. Basic Enc is possibly just an XOR of the chosen Basic key over the clear voice frames (superframe).
With newer firmware, 40 bit RC4 is also for use for free. You just select a 40 bit key, assign it to a channel and choose "full encrypt" instead of "Basic". It is compatable with MotoTRBO EP.
Full Encrypt DMRA encryption is a paid feature and a license must be issued for each radio serial number.
But it allows the use of virtually unbreakable encryption.
And getting this upgrade is easy.
So far I made a test AES 128 and an AES 256 channel and will make audio samples (raw also) and upload them to a site I use.
Another great feature on this radios is FPP, which allows you to program digital and analog channels on the go. You can even change, create, and edit encryption keys right from the front panel.
