Question Grid Number?

Hi

This may be a dumb question, but I'm very new to scanning (just one a GRE PSR 500 on Tuesday) and I have heard this a lot. I know different agencies in different areas use different codes, etc, but hopefully someone has heard of this one. What is a "grid number" I hear it quite a bit -- the conversation usually goes something like this

OFFICER: What's the case number on this?

DISPATCH: Case number 21809; and grid number 2152

OFFICER: 10-4

thanks in advance everyone!

Grid numbers typically refer to the location in their CAD system. The computer splits the served area into blocks or grids to organize calls, make sure the right FD gets paged, calls are dispatched to the proper PDs etc. Its usually an arbitrary number, sometimes they use a variation of lat/lon but the one our dept used was just numbered blocks starting in the NW corner of the county.

Thanks Radioman

I wondered if it had something to do with the location. Makes sense!!

I would agree with the previous poster, probably specific to an area where the case was worked. In my community they call it "RD" or Report District. Probably the same paradigm with "grid number."
