Default Anyone listen to the Union Pacific?

Anybody listen to the RR in central Iowa? Hoping someone can tell me who is using 160.6800 around Marshalltown. Sounds like maint. crews, but I thought one guy was talking about a welding crew. Are they the same? Also lots of good skip on the rail band this morning. I have been getting the BNSF on 161.1000 all morning . Mike

I used to work for UP in that yard even! Let me find my timetable for ya, then you can have an up-to-date list of the channels.

38-38 sounds right for the road crews from memory
14-14 is marshalltown yard
52-52 is the road channel
71-71 is the branch line to osky

I'll find my timetable and get you the real info...

That would be great! They must be replacing track somewhere close, or repairing existing track. I usually just scan the the whole RR band, never know what might pop up (like today). Mike

Maintenance in the way commonly uses 38-38 (160.68) for their operations, but they must clear trains on the road channel.

Jason, do these crews(maint.) come from all over, or are they local? Do certain ones specialize in certain tasks? Mike

It really depends on what they're doing. Certain gangs specialize in certain things... Bridges, Curves, Etc, Etc.

If you ever get around the TRT909 machine, they use at least a half of a dozen frequencies, if not more. Google TRT 909. It pulls out wooden ties, lays down a concrete one, and changes out both rails all at the same time. I'm sure it does more, but that is what I recall off hand.

Thanks for that Info Tim, I will check it out! I have heard of the TRT909, just never seen it. I need to get down by the yard, they usually stage a bunch of maint. crews and equipement down there.(couple of empty industrial parking lots). I have been using the 346XT, with a RR band search (Diamond Antenna) does a pretty good job for Railroad freq. Mike

Is there any reason to listen to rail frequencies unless they are doing track work in your area? I have a very busy set of tracks right here in my town (the tracks that parallel hwy 30) and I never hear anything.

Turn the volume up

Try 160.89 for Tama/Toledo. You should at least be able to hear the dispatcher with a halfway decent antenna...

Then again... maybe not. Tama sits in kindof a black hole for RF... Couldnt talk simplex from downtown tama to battleground crossing locomotive to locomotive...

I don't live there anymore, I'm in Blairstown. Same tracks though. Just nothing else around.

It's actually a really nice little town, I was surprised. T/T is a shit-hole and I work there, so I split the different and moved halfway back home.
