Default Story County Motorola System

I just recently put in the Story county system, and getting A LOT of TGs. I have checked the database, and lots of these arent listed. Seems to be a lot 44xxx-48xxx groups. I was wondering if anyone had a more complete list for Story county.

I will add any that I do figure out to the database. Thanks, Mike

Thats funny , I keep searching and end up here also. Whats strange is almost everything I log, is not listed in the database. As a matter of fact, I am not sure I have even gotten anything that IS listed. I will have to check through my list. I live a good 35-40 miles away, so I am sure I miss a lot also. Mike

FWIW I monitored the Story TRS for a year when i lived in Ames and all I ever saw was local businesses and the occasional Story County Deputy. Of course Micron Weather is on there also. I lost interest after a while cuz all i heard was Bob talking to Jim about the fields and where to dump the next load of gravel! Not to say there wouldnt be a benefit to figure out just who is on there, but it would be a real PITA as the clients dont usually (read never) identify themselves let alone what company they are! I have my old logs around here somewhere, I think i had something like 100 or so talkgroups on that site. One thing I can say, it has some serious reach! I can pick it up sitting at my desk in Mtown and sitting at my desk at home just the same with a portable, not too bad if you ask me!

You are right thats for sure. All I have heard have been what sounded like road crews, construction companies, propane deliverys ect. Last night I did pick up Colo FD. , TG 60000---but that is the ONLY one I have found on the list. Everything I have been picking up ,has been inside, on HH, next to a computer----so you are dead on about the reach! Not bad for an 800 MHz. system. Mike

Radioman, do you have any more TGID's for ISU from your time in Ames because I'm finding more there than are listed and there were some that I think are incorrect like 57504 is listed as car to car but I'm pretty sure it is the parking division and they don't take any prisoners. Also just recently as the students are coming back there was a lot of activity of crews re-decorating dorms or apartments, I don't know if they are outside contractors or something to do with the University but they have defiantly been busy.
Would it be worth listing unknown IDs on here and just comparing what we have, I know sometimes I have ideas on who they could be as I'm sure others do and I know what your saying about people not identifying themselves it drives me nuts ... Dan you need to meet Rick with those buckets

Do you have the fleetmap set correctly? The only talkgroups in this 5 digit format you are seeing should be 57344 and above. All the other talkgroups should be in 000-00 format. The numbers you listed might be radio ids and would be part of the talkgroup range between approximately 503-01 to 506-0x.

Donald, I will confess I know FAR less about Motorola systems (I listen mostly to RACOM up here), as a matter of fact this is the first Motorola system I have programmed. I am using a BC346XT, as far as I can tell I just set it on Motorola, and enter the freq. I have tried it with control channel only off and on, and same results. I have all the freq. listed for the system programmed in.

I thought maybe I had it set wrong also, but I did get TG 60000 which is listed as Colo FD. As I said I dont really know that much about Motorola systems, is there anything else I might be missing? You might be right though, they could be radio IDs. Usually its just 2 people talking about nothing. I do have the 346 set to ICALLS.

I am still finding my way around the Uniden products (I have a 246t also). All my other radios are RS. So that might be part of the problem. If you guys can think of anything let me know. Thanks for the help, Mike

You guys piqued my interest. I usually don't run systems in ID search mode, but curiosity got the best of me and I set one of my scanners at home to search the Story County system.

I found a ton of new talkgroups, but I don't know what any of them are. I'm taking notes on all of them but they don't make much sense yet.

46720 is an interesting TGID to listen to though, that's for sure. Sounds like a bunch of truckers that just BS their entire route to where ever they're going. I caught these gems today:

"Someone needs to tell her to put the pipe down"
"Crack doesn't smoke itself you know"
"No, I would know"

-- AND --

"Smooth as my wife's butt."
"Not gonna go there."

I hear a lot of DTMF tones all over the system. What would these be used for? They sound automated.

Sounds like a lot of the traffic is coming from the Clive area.

Mike, Motorola trunk systems are divided into 8 blocks, numbered 0-7. Each block is assigned a size code that determines how many talkgroups can be assigned to that block and how many radios can be assigned to each talkgroup

To set the fleetmap - assuming the 396xt menus are similiar to the 346xt - select the system to edit then go into 'Edit Sys Option', scroll down and select 'Edit Fleet Map' and then select custom. The block number will be at the top of the display and you select one of the size codes listed below.

Size codes for the Story Co system are:
block 0-size code 1
block 1-size code 1
block 2-size code 1
block 3-size code 2
block 4-size code 2
block 5-size code 3
block 6-size code 1
block 7-size code 0

Donald,

Do you happen to know if the fleetmap is the same for the EE trunking system that's also listed under Story Co. in the database is the same as the 'Story County System'? Just the one that's being discussed lists a fleetmap. Thanks.

I don't mean to totally jump off topic, but does anyone listen to the Electronic Engineering trunked systems in Des Moines that are listed in the database? There aren't many talkgroups listed for either systems and I've never heard of anyone using an EE trunk system -- only simplex channels when they rent EE radios.

As for the Story County system, I know that Cyclone Cab, Chitty Waste, Iowa State Ready Mix, and Butch's Amoco are all on the system... along with countless farmers and other companies.

I used to use an EE Trunked system in Fort Dodge... Worked pretty well... but then again, they have the biggest stick on the skyline...

I also know of a certain "Pirate type Bufoon" that Radioman96p71 would know... He used the same trunked system to play with for awhile. I guess as long as the check clears, they dont care what happens on it. I cant say I would care either.

In fort dodge, it is mainly farmers with rental radios, and the local taxi company. Sometimes you'll hear the EE Techs using it.

I can't hear that system from my location so I haven't been able to figure out a fleetmap that I would want to submit, but my best guess is that it is not the same as the Story County system. Here is the fleetmap I use in my scanner for that system:

block 0 size code 1
block 1 size code 1
block 2 size code 2
block 3 size code 2
block 4 size code ?
block 5 size code 0
block 6 size code 2
block 7 size code 0

My understanding is the Story County system is actually a different system than the Ames EE system.
