Yeah, that's a good one.
I've found a lot of really interesting cameras on the net. There are cameras at TONS of universities all over the world. Some outdoors looking at quads and such, and some inside looking at nerd type stuff; Computer labs, Robotics Labs, Server rooms, etc.
Other really common cams you'll find are traffic cameras for certain locales, however, most of those can be easily found by locals going to their city websites. Western Washington, for example, has a really good
system of traffic cameras, run by both the DOT and Several local cities, like Seattle. Most of the cameras will be focused on high traffic, high incident locations, and because of this, whenever I hear the MVA Calls, I check the location from the City's
Real-Time 911 site against the City's camera site. Every so often, you catch a
scene like this one. I was actually able to take a screenshot of the scene before the Fire Trucks got there.
Another way to find live webcams is to use sites like
Opentopia, or
camhacker. (They aren't actually doing any hacking. They just parse and list links to unprotected cameras that are already accessible on the net somewhere.)
For the ultimate treasure hunt, and the last resort to finding an interesting webcam, you can use a number of advanced Google operators in your searches.
Be aware of a few things if you want to use the following search methods.
- Using these search strings is a crap shoot. You never know what you're going to get, sometimes a broken link, and sometimes something totally creepy (like some random dude's living room, or some baby's crib), or totally lame, like total darkness, or a business that is closed. It's really anyone's guess as to what is on the other side of these links. Seriously, sometimes it's totally cool, and might even be relevant to someone on this site (like this theater camera, I know the next time you hear a call at this mall, the first place you'll go is to that link :-D).
- Some of these search strings will trigger Google to shut down the search, after you've gone a couple of pages. This usually happens when I try to advance search pages in Google. I might be trying to go from page 4 to page 5, or from page 3 to page 4 or any of those searches, and Google might say something like "We're sorry...but your query looks similar to automated requests from a computer virus or spyware application. To protect our users, we can't process your request right now. ". If that happens, just go to the next search string, and keep trying. Make sure you set your preferences in Google to show 100 hits per page, and turn off Safe-Search filtering.
- Remember that if you find a camera that is totally black, it's probably just dark there, as opposed to the camera not working. If the camera isn't working, you won't get anything at all. Check these again in 8-12 hours. This is a good example. At night, totally black. By day, a cute little French grocery (Gastronomie Russe in Paris, France).
Ok, so here is the list of Google Search Strings. They all use a different variation of the "inurl", "intitle", and "site" operators. Copy them into Google, you're on your way.
