I Just bought a bcd996t for our area that went to a apco 25 digital 800, i would like to know how to program freqs for this scanner. my dealer said i could come here to possibly do a quick locate and program if i subscribe. i did not find anything on my area which is FINNEY COUNTY KANSAS 67846 OR GARDEN CITY KANSAS. Its best if you get the software to program the radio. Thre a several folks who sell the software and Uniden has its own free edition. I have a 396 (earlier version) and it wa intimidating at first but I got the hang of it somewhat quickly. If you dont know much about trunking systems, it is going to be a challange. Elsewhere on this site in the WIKI section - there should be some tutorial info to get you started. I have since moved on to a GRE PSR500 and still think it is one of the hottest things going...
Hmmm.... I have heard that last sentence somewhere before... (Many moons ago) :\

JR-

I think you are mixing some different terms here and it is causing confusion. No big deal- trunking systems are new to your area. A trunking system works with a set of frequencies (in your case 800 MHz) and then radio traffic is carried on "Talkgroups". The site that Fire576 posted has all the information that we have on that radio system.

The Garden City tower of KSICS currently uses the following radio frequencies (these will be changing in the next year as the whole state is rebanded).
866.42500
866.73750 Control Channel
867.06250 Alternate Control Channel
867.38750
868.37500

You will need to program these frequencies into your scanner. Then, because the "Talkgroups" that will be used by Finney County / Garden City PD are not in the database yet- you will need to run your scanner in "open" mode and listen to the radio traffic. From listening and some detective work you should be able to determine which talkgroup is used for dispatch, car to car etc. This is one of the interesting parts of the scanning hobby.

Once you determine what talkgroups are used, you can program the ones you want to listen to into your scanner and stop running it in "open" mode. And don't forget to return here and post the information you discover about your area.

Good luck!

BTW- I would be surprised if your local Moto dealer has any detailed information on the state radio system. All the installation and maintenance of the system is being handled by KDOT- with equipment being purchased directly from Motorola. I am willing to bet that your local Motorola dealer can't even program a Motorola radio to work on KSICS- only KDOT (and a few county radio shops such as Shawnee, Sedgwick and Johnson) has the system key necessary to program the radios. Trunked systems are very different from the conventional radio systems you are used to dealing with.

If you do any traveling, you may want to consider programming in the entire system. I'm not sure about the Unidens, but with most GRE and Radio Shack digitals, you can program in the just control frequencies and set the system to "roam" mode. (I believe there are 31 active controls and alternates in the KSICS system right now, which is handy for me because both of my scanners will handle up to 32 control frequencies per system.

As for talkgroups, you will really want to get that interface cable. The system is going to be vastly expanded over the coming year or so. I am guessing that at least a dozen agencies will be coming on-line in the next 18 months. Finney county is one, and I believe Reno County is just about ready to start the lease process (or may already have if someone has the inside info). Keeping up with all the new talkgroups would be problematic to say the least if you were having to manually punch in the changes and additions each time.....
