Default KC area P25 switchover ???

Anyone know when the agencies on the KS side of the KC area plan on switching over to P25? Specifically Johnson County, KS. I am trying to budget for a P25 capable scanner before the switch happens, like everyone else I have plenty of other expenses. Basicaily I don't want to go saving all my pennies for a digital scanner(s) to replace my analog scanners if the switch is still off in the distant future. I know Johnson County's new CCC (County Communications Center) is up and running now and with all the timelines that I can find on equipment upgrades seem to pointing to January 1, 2010.

Anyone care to shed some light on this? Thanks in advance.

Is the 700mhz digital or will I still just need to enter the updated frequencies into my analog scanners? I'm not familiar with 700mhz. I will do some reading up on it but any cliff notes would be usefull. Is there a website that lists any of this stuff that anyone knows of? Just wondering because I have a grandmother in Livingston County (Chillicothe) Missouri that has an old Radio Shack analog and non-trunking scanner. I can always ask in the Missouri forum of this site if need be. Thanks for the help.

700 will likely be P25 trunking.

Edit: Example have a look at Independence MO 700 P25.
Also, check RR Wiki for details of P25 trunking.

I think all comms on 700 are supposed to be digital.

From what I've heard it will be a 700 MHz 18 channel 7 site simulcast P-25 trunked system with future growth planned to 24 channels.

Default area P25 switchover

You may also consider waiting to see how much secure/encryption is used before putting out alot of money.

Based on what I've heard so far, encryption shouldn't be a huge factor with the new JOCO P25 system. With the exception of JOCO Sheriff, Lenexa, and Olathe encrypting some of their tactical channels, all dispatch comms should be in the clear.

encryption is one thing that worries me when it comes to spending this kind of money for a scanner. I hope to be working for one of the Local PD's as a Dispatcher so we will see what happens. At a minimum I would like to be able to monitor Fire dispatch and Tac channels. I get a lot of enjoyment out of that alone but its always just as good to know what the Police are up to.
