Default New Towers Coming Online

Im hearing radio traffic from the Mcpherson and Saline county Troopers. The traffic is on C KHP 1 which is what they will be using in that part of Troop C. Im thinking maybe the mcpherson county tower has been switched over because of where the guys are on I-135. The ottawa tower has been switched over to digital since the start of the switch to digital, but the saline county guys didnt really use it. Now im hearing all of them on the system. Im hearing all of this traffic from the pott co. tower.

When I got home today, I pulled up Pro96Com off my high omni antenna (85 feet). I can pull in several of the towers surrounding Newton and I'm not seeing anything to indicate a new tower is up this week. Here's all I'm seeing from towers that "should" be able to hear a tower out of McPherson:

Troop C is set up differently than the other Troops because of the data/voice sharing that has to happen on the networks. I don't know which one each is going to be but they are going to break each of he Troop C talk groups down to areas/zones of the Troop. I learned the other day in an Interop meeting that each Troop can decide how they want to communicate across the state.

Correct- that is why there is no good answer to some of the questions that have been posted here as to what talkgroups are being used where. Troop B, for example, seems to operate their specialty units (Motor Carrier, K-9 and Motorist Assistance units) and troopers traveling through (usually on their way to Salina for training or to the fleet garage in Topeka for a new car) on B-KHP-1. But, their regular patrol units dispatch on zone channels- Zone A, Zone B, Zone C. Zones are areas that are organized under the supervision of a Lieutenant- for example Troop B, Zone E is Douglas and Franklin Counties. Troop H uses a completely different model from what I have heard. They have divided their troop into a north zone (H-KHP-1) and south zone (H-KHP-2). KTA originally planned to break the turnpike into a north and south dispatch zone- but has now decided to leave it as a single zone and dispatch the whole turnpike on KTA-South talkgroup.

Troop C was originally set up with 3 zones (C-KHP 1 through 3). It sounds like they have decided to change this to follow the system that has been established in Troop B. I would not be surprised to find that as the system expands, more troops will adopt the Troop B plan. It seems to work well, lets the Lieutenant hear his troopers and they don't have to listen to radio traffic from a trooper 90 miles away on the other side of the troop.

I have been curious, has anyone figured out how Troop F is using the system?

I heard once...and seems to be working true so far.. that until everything in C is finished, troopers in the counties surrounding C use C-KHP-1. And troopers in and outside of saline co use C-KHP-1. In between is supposed to be C-KHP-2 but havent heard much from that except for daily broadcasts or weather updates. I've traveled over by great bend and i know the troopers out that way use F-KHP-2 and sounded like troopers closer to wichita use F-KHP-1. I just wish we could get some news about when some of the new towers were even considering starting the switch...haha.

I've kind of wondered if they weren't waiting for rebanding to hit and just bring up the new sites and units on the new frequencies all at the same time. It would certainly be more cost and time effective rather than program all the equipment once for 860's and then have to come back in a few months and reprogram everything for 850's.....
