As of last year, grounds traffic was still on 867.100, and you've got to be pretty close to hear it, it doens't carry very far at all. Not even the city limits. So far as I've seen, they haven't established a digital talkgroup for the fair, and I doubt they will until the joint State/Reno County site on top of the Plaza Towers downtown goes active. Portables at the fair won't do much good trying to hit the Partridge tower!

Traffic control outside the fairgrounds must have moved to the digital system, because I only heard fairgrounds traffic last year (and I didn't have a digital scanner then), unlike past years where it was all on the fair repeater.

EMS first responder traffic was stil on the EMS HEAR channel that Reno County EMS remains on..

Was in Hutch briefly yesterday (not at the fair) , appears traffic units around Hutchinson are running F-KHP-2, and 867.100 is still active for on-grounds units. I've been told the KDOT COW is set up at the fair, but so far I've had zero luck locating the reported 700 MHZ trunking system they use (Each COW has a 700 MHz system for use of 10 ICS and 2 command channels...they are NOT the same as the ICS and command channels listed in the database even though they have the same names-they are in a separate mode in the radios). They may just be using the conventional 800 mutual aid channels, I didn't get a chance to look there.

I went to the first weekend of the State Fair. I don't believe the COW was there. There were many cows on display but didn't appear that they could support any type of radio communications. In past years the portable communications vehicles and towers were set up on the north end of the fairgrounds but didn't see any this year. Also did a 700 search several times Saturday and Sunday - never picked up any control channels or other traffic in the 700 range. There was traffic on 867.100 and KHP traffic on the Troop H talkgroups.

I don't know.... I suppose with enough capacitance and a good size shunt, I bet you could load a white face up to radiate at 800 MHz. The field pattern would probably be a little weird, but you could cover the fairgrounds with one....
