Default Butler County Digital

Picking up a lot of traffic this morning and afternoon on Butler County Event 4 (TG 2267). Discussion about the Dispatch consoles and some wiring problems they;ve been having. Seems they want everything rewired and tested before the end of next week. Sounds like they may go live in November?????

I didn't think that their system had even been built yet. The county is putting how to pay for it to a vote soon.

Could they have been installing and testing the digital control stations that the homeland security region purchased for each PSAP?

I heard some folks talking like that over on NE5 PSAP on my digital radio earlier. I know also that the FAD exercise was using Moto-bridge because I heard them there as well.

Default What is a PSAP?

PSAP stand for Public Safety Answering Point. It is basically a wildcard Talkgroup that is monitored on the TRS that ties in thru the Motobridge to another conventional frequency such as the VHF-Hi National Calling Frequency. This allows a conversation that comes in over the Motobridge to be assigned a Talkgroup. This Talkgroup can be left stand-alone or tied to other groups for inter-coordination. Each region has several PSAPs corresponding to each of the National Calling Frequencies in VHF-Hi band, UHF, and 800. There are also EMS and EMA equivalents set up.

Default PSAP talkgroups

Actually Joe, you are incorrect.

The state is divided up into 14 subregions (SE1, SE2, KC3, NE4, NE5, NE6, NC 7, NC8, SC9, SC10, SW11, SW12, NW13, NW14). Each subregion has a PSAP, EOC and MED talkgroup that can be used statewide to contact a facility within the given region. For example, I can be in KC, but call back to my home dispatch center on SC9 PSAP and talk to them. The real interesting prospect, and they have talked about this, is a state convention where a bunch of users are at one place and has their radios set to their own home PSAP and or EOC and or MED talkgroup, and it maxes out that tower.

There is also a Law, Fire, EMS, EMA and Public Works talkgroup for each subregion, but those only work in that particular subregion.

They have NOTHING to do with motobridge. Motobridge is ONLY for patching the conventional mutual aid or KHP event talkgroups to another one of those same channels/talkgroups. The PSAP TG's are for dispatch centers or their units to talk to each other, EOC is for EOC's to tak to each other, etc. KHP will not patch any other talkgroups into Motobridge as a rule.

Default butler co digital

They don't have a way to pay for it yet. It goes to a vote to decide on a sales tax in November. My guess is if that passes we may start to see things happen next year. But I think it may be a few years before the transition is complete. Sedgwick County wants to make the switch in 2012, but again, how to pay for it. I was told by the Reno County 911 Director at APCO yesterday in Salina that her plan is to see 800 digital in Reno County by the end of next year; at least for PD and SO who got a grant to kick it off. Fire and EMS still need to find a funding stream. And if the phone companies and lobbyists get their way, 911 tax revenues will no longer be able to be used for radio equipment after next year; only PSAP telephone equipment and costs.

I am friends with a couple of their medics who have told me that they have part of the state template. They don't know if they are going digital completely or just have access to a couple of the interop channels. He said they have like 6 radios on their units already.
