Default Oklahoma Highway Patrol in Topeka

Thought I would post a fun catch I made in the Topeka area.

I have seen black and white OHP suburbans in Topeka over the past 3 weeks- Usually 3 or 4 of the Suburbans traveling together on Interstate 70 and parked at a restaurant in town one evening. The OHP black and white color scheme is different then any other one I have seen- the white portion looks like the state of Oklahoma with the panhandle towards the back.

I plugged in some of their freqs for fun and... caught some traffic on 45.220 talking car to car trying to find someplace to eat one evening.

I asked around and found out that KHP is now training the canine units for OHP- they have a 10 week class going right now in Topeka.

Don't you like how they just use their freq where ever they are - regardless of whether it's licensed there or not...

This day and age, this wouldn't suprise me.
However, they've got a job to do as well. If that was the only option, then the moral goes" Do whatever it takes to get the job done".
I've had other agnecies come through my neck of the woods talking on my agency's channel. The only was I found them was because I was in open or CSQ. Had I had the mic hung up, i probably would have never heard them unless watching the channel busy indicator flashing when I know there was no activity.

Good catch. Check 44.700 too; they still use it in north central OK. I heard the Illinois State Police using 155.46 (formerly a KBI freq. here in KS) in Lawrence during a midwest governors' conference some years back. I guess it's common.

Last I knew it was the FEDERAL Communications Commission. Their license is valid (except for a few UHF and 900 Mhz frequencies up near the Canadian border) anywhere they are. Only fixed base transmitters are licensed out of a specific physical location specified in the license. The vehicles radios are licensed as MOBILE units and are not site specific. I have a ham radio license, issued by the same bureau of the FCC, and even though it lists my home address as the primary site, the license is valid anywhere I go in the United States. With reciprocal agreements I can even use it in numerous foreign countries.

As long as they identify at least every half hour while using the radios and at the end of a session, I believe they are well within the rules....

That is not correct. FCC licenses for part 90 mobile stations specify an area of operation.
In the case of OHP on 44.7 and 45.22 check their license
http://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/UlsS...licKey=1247496
Click on the Locations tab and you will see the area of operation is Statewide: OK
If they operate outside the state of Oklahoma they are violating FCC regulations.
