TK-790H and remote heads?

Does anybody know if all TK-790H's can have the head/s remote mounted. I was told by the chief that one of the radios he wanted to remote mount would not work as a remote and the department had to buy a new radio. That was before my time here and I am wondering if the radio shop just wanted to sell a new radio as well as the remote parts.

We are now ready to make one of the radios dual head and don't want to be forced to buy another radio...

Sounds like another case of a slick sales person. The issue is more of can you get the parts needed
to make it a remote operation. I have never had to convert from a front mount to a remote mount.
Also the cost of the remote kit comes into play.

I will tel you that there is a speaker wire plug in the head that it's use depends on if you use the
internal speaker if the head has one or an external speaker. If you don't have audio from the internal
speaker and that's what you want, open the head up and look to see if the cable from the speaker
is floating in the breeze.

The answer is yes, the 790 can be remote mounted, Kenwood sells the kit to remote it, I'm not sure of the part numbers or price, but we've done it on many occasions. Any good Kenwood dealer should be able to help you.

Readily available on eBay. Swap a few parts, tighten some screws, should be good.

The KRK-5 is the kit for remote mounting a 90 Series radio. The KCT-22 is the remote cable you'll need to connect the drawer to the head. It comes in three lengths: 8', 17' and 25'.

And yes, you'll often see either or both on eBay.

I just took out a dual remote head TK760 and installed a dual head Maxtrac.
For the reason of................
the TK760's RFPA Failed, and this is not Kewood land.
The maxtrac was easier to operate and plenty of parts available locally for repairs. The rest of the fire company fleet all have either remote mounted M100's or Maxtrac's. Going to 800 MHz P25 very soon. Those are installed already.

I have already priced and was ready to order when the chief told me about the last time they did a dual head upgrade. I will be using the KRK-6DH for dual head and getting a mic and basic head for the remote location.

I kind of thought it was a load, I even went as far as to remove the covers and check out the front panel to radio connections, it is just like the other radio with dual heads. I was planning on switching the radios just to make sure.

The main reason I want to get away from the current radio service is they have screwed us once to many times. I cost us almost $400.00 to get the dual head setup programmed to our needs. The engine was out of service for one day, radioless for one day and it was still not right. I purchased the cable and software and fixed the programming for less than they wanted for fixing their errors, they were going to charge us a service call and programming charge due to the fact too much time had elapsed since they programmed it and I finally figured out the remote head was not programmed right.

Okay, I didn't realize you wanted a dual-head setup. But yeah, it's dead easy to install the hardware. The software is straightforward once you get used to it.

The only tricky project would be a dual-band setup (KRK-7DB) because the firmware must be the same in each RF deck.
