I am using an NMO on a trunk lip mount with the short uhf antenna. It is well balanced, i.e. I can hear/receive as far as I can talk/transmit. Only used it on GMRS.
Anytime you can drill a hole near the middle of the roof and your spouse does not shoot you you will get better performance. Be sure to route your coax so it avoids any car computers and such. Dealer can help you here.
If you cannot drill a hole a mag mount on the roof is next best. On either roof mount be sure it will clear your garage door. Running the coax inside is a bit tricky to keep rain out and not break the conductors.
I would avoid bumper mounts. They are lower, lot more metal to interfere with your signal. For HF they are great but for other use, esp UHF they are less than ideal.
Basically the same fundamentals that apply to amateur radio apply here. Got to have the license, make sure the radio is properly aligned and programmed.
