tkTK-630H/730H svr200ud combo programming assistance
I picked up this combo on flebay a few days ago and am having issues getting it to communicate with the PC. I have the proper cable and software, an old 386 with dos, but it will not communicate.
I place the radio into programming mode from the front panel , set the software to the dual band splits, single control head option but it will not read.
The pc only has one comport , and I know it is set up properly as I was just programming some moto gear I have.
Ive tried the cable with the level converter i have with and without the 9v battery, and also tried it without the converter and still have no luck.
None of the radios have the Kenwood stickers on them , as they have a Futronics sticker on them with the associated model numbers.
Is there something I may be missing? Possibly some sort of mod done to prevent further programming that the original shop may have done?
Here is a link to the auction that has pics on it.
Any help would be appreciated. This is driving me crazy.

Where are you trying to program it? Into the ham bands or commercial. If ham bands then get the SVR200 out of the mix, you cant use it As for programming, what errors on the radio or software are you getting, What software (version) are you using to program the radio? There are a couple versions for the x30 series, one for the G model and one for the non-G.
The 730/630H are nice but on the ham bands the big issues is you cant change power levels. Your always going to be running high power. Also on the ham bands the 630 is only good if its the -3 version. The -2 and -1 will not slide into 6m.

I have not even begun to enter frequencies as I am only trying to read the radio at this point. The pc wont even read the radio to get the existing codeplug that is in there . The error I get when trying to read the radio is "Error check connection" . The software version is 2.01.
For right now , I'm not concerned abut using the setup on Ham bands. Priority 1 is just to read it.

The pc only has 1 comport and if I try to change it in the software , I get a message that says "only 1 comm port available"
I know the comm port is good , because i can hook up my moto rib and program my moto gear fine.
I did order another programming cable that is "ribless" that has a DB9 and I have another control head cable on the way. I am going to see if maybe this setup does not like my db25 with 9v battery cable and using the 25-9 pin adapter. I know this cable works on other kenwood gear , but maybe this setup does not like it.
Also the remote control cable had the power wire snipped right at the remote head , I stripped that back and added 12v in the event that would be causing it , and that was also a no go.
I have scoured the net , and I can only come up with ver 2.01 of the software.

HI,
On the small fleet of Kenwoods that I maintain, the only software I have ever used is KPG7D, and the only programmer I have used was the Kenwood cable. The software works on both the narrowband and wideband radios that I have. Also use an IBM T23 laptop and it works great.
My guess is that the cable is not working. Have you tried it on any other -30 series radios? Also, there is no need to set the software to the radios specs-it will discover it on its own. The SVR should not affect the way that it programs as they are programmed on their own. Might be nice to have...
Keep us posted on your progress.

he cable is on borrow to me from a friend who uses it for some vhf and uhf kenwoods. On the info i have found on the net , the same cable covers a ton of "6 pin " radio's. The only thing I can figure out it maybe it is not compatible with this series. Right now it is just a waiting game for the new cables. I will keep updating.

It is a db25 with the converter circuit built into the housing of the db25 with flying leads for the 9v battery to power the converter. There is no make or model on the cable. I have a 25-9 adapter i use for some other equipment and even tried another adapter to make sure those were not bad.

With the correct programming cable, there is no need for the converter. Are you using a RIB like one would use for a MOTO? If you can find one, use a KPG4 (I think that is the correct part #). There should be a DB25 that plugs into the serial port.

Its not a seperate rib , the level converter is built into the plug housing. I have an ebay KPG4 on the way. We shall see what happens with that one.

Same here. Mine wonders what the heck a Spectra, or a 730/830 dual band is. Or a codeplug...

Thats funny. I feel bad subjecting her to this stuff. I know if i wasn't a RF head, I would seriously think there was something wrong with me. Maybe there is because I've already been subjected to more than enough RF.

Update. New cable arrived today,
I place radio in program mode , hit read radio, the control head will count down as the file reading process on pc screen goes up. It will get to 96% on software and 1k on control head , then times out. I get "error" on control head and "check connections" on pc screen ...
I tried every possible combo for radio type in the software prior to reading and it does the same thing.
grrrrrr ,

Are you using the level converter or are you using just the cable? Also, check you power supply and amake sure you are getting 13.8 volts and that the thumbscrews on the cable are snug.

Well, at least it works now. MAKE SURE YOU SAVE A COPY OF THE CODEPLUG!!!! Very important. Do you have a copy of the manual for the KPG7D?
