TK-272G-1 extra channels

Kenwood lists the TK-272G-1 as 32-channel max capacity. I have one that I am able to put in a lot more. I currently have about 60-channels in it now. Is their a later version that allowed for more??? The software seems to allow for 128 zones providing one channel in each zone; I am thinking 128-CH capacity??. Radio perfoms perfectly from 144-170+ MHz.

The unit that you have was probably hacked into a TK270G. It is not hard, but most of the time the firmware does not get changed. When you read your radio what model does the software say it is?

I also have noticed this anomality in a TK-272G I have. What is the process for hacking into it? Is it as simple as changing the model and downloading new info in to the radio? Also, when I read it, the radio always comes back as a 272G. You mentioned the firmware, can you explain a little more detail about changing it?

Yes! I used the software to change my 272 to a 270 (via the model pull down).
Now I have the 128 channel/zone combo. As far as I can tell, all other functions work as advertised. No special hacking needed. Don't worry about a firmware update if the radio operates normally.

With all the newer portables I have, my TK-272G (I mean TK-270G) has the size and performance that beats out the others. It's my main go-to for just general snooping around.
