Since upgrading to the latest version of IceCast, I am receiving a Windows notification advising me that the feed is not writable. This appears to be happening every other day between 0300 and 0430 hours. I have Windows update completely turned off. Prior to upgrading my feed would stay up for months at a time.

#1 - Any suggestions?
#2 - Can I downgrade to the previous version without complications?

Thank you for your time.

Not sure what you mean?

I hear your feed with good audio.
Your tags are working.
I assume you are using ScannerCast.
ScannerCast does do a program auto restart every other day to get around a bug but this only takes a few seconds.

iTunes & Winamp show this for a description: KB2COP
Since this does not tell others what your feed is, you may want to change it to match your feed description.
The only thing that I see that should be

Thank you for responding and yes, I meant ScannerCast. That was no small error considering the work Peter puts into the product and the price we pay (my apologies, Pete)!

I changed the feed description to be more locally appropriate and thanks for the observation. Still, I don't know how to solve the problem. Is there an option to disable the every-other-day re-set? I am running a dedicated 996T on a dedicated Vista PC (it performs no other function). There are times when I don't know about the issue until I'm at work. If it weren't for LogMeIn this would be a huge inconvenience to my listeners (avg. about 8-9 at any given time).

AVG and a few other virus scans also have a problem with ScannerCast. Do you have anything else that may update at that time like virus signatures.

Well, that IS interesting... Sorry to hear you're having trouble. That IS when the ScannerCast audio subsystem reset occurs. What does it say in ScannerCast.log? Anything interesting?

OK, well... That's interesting. Tell us more about what's happening... I assume that 3:40 is when you have the problem??

What message do you get? What happens next? You also might want to turn on DETAILED logging. Note that we only need the log output around the place you get the error...

So, to answer your initial question: YES, you can downgrade (move back to the previous version of ScannerCast) without any complications.

Yikes. After the problem, is there a log file named scannercast_ERROR.log created? If so, can you post it, please?

This is very strange. It DOES appear to be related to ScannerCast's recycling of the audio subsystem (which is a new feature in V0.14) -- Is this an older or slower PC, perhaps?? It's entirely possible that the delay that ScannerCast uses during this recycling isn't long enough for some systems. I admit that I took a SWAG at guessing how long ScannerCast needed to wait between stopping the audio subsystem and then restarting it again. Whatever number I chose seemed to work during testing :)

I have a similar error every two or three days. The problem always occurs overnight, at approximately 3:30am.

ScannerCast stops broadcasting and an error window pops up which reads "ScannerCast has encountered an error and had to close. Click OK to terminate the program."

Then it gives some diagnostic info: Process ID: 0x97c (2428) Thread ID: 0x984 (2436). The only solution is the to restart the computer.

A little background info: the computer is running XP Home, SP3. 1GB RAM. This machine is used only for my two feeds. It does nothing else.

Sounds like you're having the same problem... ScannerCast is probably not waiting long enough during the audio recycle operation (see my reply directly above).

You shouldn't have to restart your whole SYSTEM when this problem occurs... just ScannerCast.

@theCop and @jhem1212:

You guys willing to try a test version of ScannerCast, if I code-up a potential solution?

I will be happy to test the new write, however I find it interesting that I re-installed the latest version into the Programs sub-directory (it had been previously installed to my desktop) and haven't experienced the issue yet.

...with fingers crossed

I re-installed the latest version into the Programs sub-directory (it had been previously installed to my desktop) and haven't experienced the issue yet.

Is your computer setup with Fast User Switching enabled and/or is the screensaver setup to prompt for a password? I suspect that's why you were experiencing problems. It sounds like once the password protection kicked in, ScannerCast didn't have read/write access to the %UserProfile%\Desktop directory its folder resided in, so it threw errors at you until you logged back in. Putting ScannerCast in the Program Files or Program Files (x86) directory fixed the issue because by default it's accessible to installed programs.

The moral of the story is that, it's probably NOT a good idea to install/run ScannerCast from the Desktop directory. The best practice is to install it in the Program Files (for 32 bit OS) or Program Files (x86) (for 64 bit OS) directory with the rest of the programs.

Nothing in your logs really indicated to me that it was an issue with the recycle audio subsystem routine. The errors were occurring quite a bit after the routine, and seemingly for no good reason. The fact that we kept seeing the "Exiting without Stop Broadcast button being pressed." message appearing signals something going on with Windows forcing the program to stop broadcasting.

Sorry to hear that.

I've YET to re-experience the problem, although I did get a "No Audio" notification from a listener. I am assuming the problem was on his end as I had 10 other listeners at the time.

Thank you to all who offered their help.
