While this may not be what you're thinking about, one use of the "guard channel" term is one or more vacant frequencies between those in use by closely located systems. This helps to prevent adjacent channel interference in the system.

Yup, some agencies use it for the "O S^7t" channel, for Life-Safety immediate danger. Others use it for Warnings etc.

Did you hear something? Freq? PL ?

121.5 for aviation is reffered to as the "Gaurd Channel". Satellites no longer monitor it for ELT transmissions but many ELT's are still in use that transmit on 121.5. It is sometimes used for emergency communications too.

Cool Guard Channel

121.5 and 243.0 are both Exclusively used for Aviation/ Marine Emergency and Search and Rescue. Previously as stated Emergency Locator Transmitters and EPIRB's (The marine equivalenr) broadcasted on these frequencies. This year the Rescue organizations no longer montitor these frequencies for distress beacons. The new beacons broadcast on 403.00 mHz. The previous frequencies mentioned are still used for emergency voice communication. In adfdition in the wake of the 911 attacks, it is recomended that all aircraft monitor "the guard channel" so that there is a common frequency for immediate communication to all aircraft and to provide a frequency for intercept aircraft to contact those who stray into restricted or closely regulated airspace. Channel 16 Marine 156.80 mHz is the International Marine Distrss and Calling Frequency. 2182 kHz USB is the HF equivalent. Probably more than what you were looking for. Hope it was helpful.

Best regards,
Allen J.

Whenever you hear a pilot say "guard channel" you can be assured they are referring to the AM aircraft guard channels previously mentioned.
