Default Range on LWIN frequencies

Hey guys,

Been lurking here a while and I got a question. I'm here in Prairieville (just outside of Baton Rouge) and I was wondering how far the LWIN frequencies travel? I know that the older freqs can skip, but what about the LWIN?

I've got the PRO-106 and I can hear all of BRPD, and EBRSO on LWIN. LSP is hit or miss and I also have NOPD and that area and I don't pick up anything.

Is this normal?

I live in Nothern EBR and listen to EBRSO and Troop A on LWIN with no problems. I drive all over lower Livingston parish at night and still listen to them I hear them down there on the Livingston tower mostly and sometimes Hammond it I'm down around Black Lake and Geismar around Head of Island. Most of the time it's the Livingston tower.
Up here at my house in northern EBR I hear them on the Jackson, Livingston tower and EBRSO on the Baywood tower that is really in Pride and not Baywood. It is only about a mile from my house.

the sage hill antenna site near me shows a 14 mile range.

You can go to any antenna site on RR database & get the range.

Thanks guys...

On a side note, while driving to work today (offshore) I decided to take the PRO-106 with me and see what it's good for. I traveled down I-10 to Sorrento, then Hwy 70 to Plattenville, down 308 to Th'doux and Hwy 20/24 to Houma.

I started picking up Troop C (Gray) around Plattenville and could also hear some of Troop A. EBR SO was clear on the 800 mHz and some LWIN. Houma PD was clear just north of Th'doux.

I heard one break in squelch for NOFD when I was almost in front of the Troop C station. I heard Kenner PD some also.

This is still with the factory rubber ducky. When I fly in, I plan on getting a permanent mount antenna for my truck and house.

Thanks.

Not totally true... this is a range that would be available by a submitter. Besides engineering studies performed by the installers, the only reliable way to determine the range is by submissions.

I think I added this one in, and it was based on where I could reliably decode the control channel on a high-gain antenna (based on my notes from the site visit). This would provide a listener of an approximate estimation of expected possible expectations of perhaps maybe having a probable chance of decode

No problem... just don't want folks thinking that RR can predict ranges...

The only time that I can pick up anything out of the New Orleans area, is when there is a strong thunderstorm passin thru the area. And that's Troop B and C. Lafayette I have no problem picking up Troop I or L out of Mandeville. I live in Denham Springs ( just outside of Baton Rouge) I have a 396 and a base antenna on a 20 foot mast.

red8,

Thanks... That sounds about right. I'm here in Pr'ville and I've been picking up Troop C just as clear as Troop A. Troop L and Troop B are a close second and all I have is my PRO 106 with the stock antenna. I couldn't see any difference with the 800 mHz antenna.

I've been on the road a good bit this week back and forth to New Orleans and it seems like a dead spot along Grammercy on the Interstate even though they have a pretty nice 700 mHz set up on the shared comm tower on the interstate. Once I pass LaPlace, I start hearing Kenner, JPSO and NOPD.

Where is the tower on the interstate? What site is it?

There's no 700 site on the interstate at Gramercy. The St. James parish LWIN site is on our communications tower at the EOC in Convent. The St. James system gets poor reception on the interstate so I imagine the State system would as well coming from the same tower site.
