Default Amateur here with a couple of questions...

I seriously feel like that kid in school the didn't ever understand what the teacher was talking about when it comes to scanning. That being said, I have a couple questions I'd like to ask. The local sheriff's department in our parish just switched to digital. All I want to do is receive transmissions. I have a PRO-164 and while reading the manual I noticed it list several DCS codes. Can I store these in my scanner and listen our am I SOL? This sucks because I just got the 164 as a gift and it would be a shame if I had to put it on ebay so soon. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Matt

I don't think this is in the correct forum.....

But can you tell us what state & county this sheriff's department is in? Or perhaps include a link to the data here on RR? Then we can look at the listing and see what is needed.

The PRO-164 is an analog scanner. If the agency you want to monitor is digital, that scanner won't do it. DCS codes are used for analog transmissions. You do not even need to program them if you don't want to. The scanner can be set to "search" and display whatever code is being used on a channel. When there are two agencies on a single frequency, and you only want to hear one of them, that's when you program the code. Here's more: DCS - The RadioReference Wiki

I live in LaSalle Parish. The town is Jena,LA. The sheriff's office has operated on 155.115 for the longest but they had a big story in the local paper about going digital. A deputy told me that starting last monday the sheriff's office would be all digital. I haven't heard a single thing on the normally active 155.115 in 2 days. Here is what RR has about the frequencies: La Salle Parish, Louisiana (LA) Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference

It looks like there is an analog system and a digital system. They will eventually all be on the digital system. Here is that link: Scanner Frequencies: Louisiana Wireless Information Network (LWIN) Trunking System, Statewide, Louisiana

La Salle Parish Sheriff is talkgroup 47000 on the digital system. I don't see them listed on the analog system.

As far as scanners go, I like either the PSR-500 (PSR-500 - The RadioReference Wiki) or Radio Shack PRO-106 (Pro-106 - The RadioReference Wiki). They are essentially the same scanner.

Cool

The GRE 500 is on sale currently around the $449 price range. The Uniden 396XT is roughly $500. You can buy a used 396T for probably around $250-300.

Your dept likely won't tell you this, but it's very possibly that most (or all) of their communications might be encrypted. If you have a source, then you might want to ask them.

Also, it's highly unlikely that they would suddenly move to digital without a backup. They might still use VHF for some time and just rebroadcast it to the new trunk system.

Bayou, sounds like your SO has went to 700mhz digital like alot of the state. My SO here in East Baton Rouge is now on it too.
If you stopped hearing your SO on the old freq. I bet that's what's happened.

I had to get a Radio Shack Pro-106 to listen to the State Police and my local SO.

You need to do some research before you buy a new scanner. If you are going to listen to any of the new 700 stuff you will need a scanner that will do digital and P25.

Don't get the Pro-164 it doesn't do P25

LOVE! my Pro 106 - all over S Louisiana, everything from old conventional tiny municipal to LWIN P25 state wide and everything in between. Even all of the BR/PS that's scattered between P25 and 800mhz. BTW, I'm still getting a lot of LSP on their old Moto II 800mhz...

My newest scanner is a 106 I like it.

What are you still hearing on LSP 800?

Talk about crazy down here in EBR the EBRSO is on 700 P25, 800 digital and 800 analog.

I'm hearing the same things I hear on LWIN with LSP, the usual bidness...

It sounds like they still have several units that have not been upgraded but are operational, troops A & I.

got to hear a great narc surveillance operation in BR last week while passing through, texting with a CI who couldn't talk, trying to determine a suspect's identity, watching a house but not wanting to blow it with a raid so they stopped visitors several miles away with marked units for traffic... pretty interesting. I was driving so I'm unsure what system it was or if it was SO or PD.
