From the horse's mouth- they're going encrypted BECAUSE of online streaming:

Aw, be a good sport and donate it to "BROADCASTIFY"
They have the smarts to make it into an "appliance" (that will quit working like most appliances do)

Well there going somewhere, but not in New Orleans and growing.
Encrypted Agencies - The RadioReference Wiki
What more evidence is there that feeds are the reason ? I cant help feel they can sure help get people interested in a radio for themselves but at $400+ a piece a lot of people cant justify it. Ive programmed I guesstimate 75+ radios last few years but I also have a lot that state they cant afford it.

I'll consider $10 and a Caniac Combo from Raising Canes. But you'll have to pay for the shipping.

According to Region 1 officials, law enforcement dispatch channels will not be encrypted.
This is a sensible decision, and I am impressed that they made this decision.

I don't care what the Officers' feelings are in the matter. If they're that afraid to do their jobs, retire or leave and find work in another field. Americans do NOT need to live under a government with secret police, especially in a city with such a controversial (to put it mildly) police department. And I was in law enforcement in metro New Orleans for well over 30 years, including NOPD service, so I think my thoughts on the matter bear a little weight.

It was also posted to nola.com yesterday evening:

Col. John Fortunato, spokesman for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, said Friday that all of JPSO's dispatch channels would also remain open to the public.

Thanks Kevin...
I talked to a very high ranking deputy (who is my neighbor) and he knows nothing about it. I also called my friend who programs their radios and he said it's still on for encryption.
I hope they are wrong!

Wow, this is a big 180 from where they were a month ago. Hopefully, this will remain and stand to serve as an indicator that the NOPD is open about their daily activities.
The agency was one of the most corrupt in the country, they've worked hard to clean that up, and stay in a positive public image.

A win for the public in NO, but...
Would they have made the same decision if they
had not been under Federal scrutiny for misdeeds??

"Planning to put an encryption system in their scanners" says the news anchor.
at least these people should educate themselves before attempting to educate the public on something they know nothing about. LOL

Decsion NOT to encrypt
Bravo to the powers that be of all those juridisdictions for making the descion NOT to encrypt their radios.
In today's electronic world, if they do not want the public to hear something, then they can go to MDTs, cell/landline telephones or face to face converstaions. If none of the above is available, then I have no problem having 1 talkgroup/frequeny available to encryption for those severely limited type transmissions. Otherwise radio transmissions are public airwaves with access to anyone.
We the people do pay the taxes for their equipment and their salaries, therefore we the people, have the right to know what is going on. Furthermore, laws dealing with using a scanner during the commision of a crime are already on the books.
Any other jursidiction which already uses encryption needs to reverse that descision and open their radio systems, save for that one designated encrypted talkgroup/channel.

No, that's the best reason FOR encryption there is. If you were an NOPD officer would you want them to know you hang around the donut shop and party the night away on Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras)? If they knew they'd make an Ash of you on Wednesday.
Time for popcorn as I hunker down for yet another encryption thread. (;->)
