LTR/Passport

Been investigating the possibility of putting up a LTR/PassPort system. I know that certain versions of Motorola radios come with Passport installed, such as the HT-1550XLS. I know you can install an additional board into a conventional HT-1250, but there is a version that supposedly comes factory ready for passport. My question is, are all of the Motorola products that support Passport have an additional board installed or do they have it programmed into the operating system of the radio. Which radios have it factory programmed and which models require the board.

I am no expert when it comes to Motorola equipment, as I use Kenwood radios on my system, but the radios with PassPort in them are the CDM1550-LS+ (mobile) and the HT1250-LS+ (portable). The "+" sign means PassPort is added to them. I also believe that there is an extra board in it for PassPort, but that board is added at the factory.

For the LS+ radios, the conventional and LTR firmware is written in assembler code and resides in the radio's main board. The PassPort code is written in C (and at last check was a disgusting mess of spaghetti crap) that fits into (IIRC) 128 KB of memory on the PassPort board - which is an 1250LS+ keypad (complete with backlight LEDs, even when buried inside a 1550LS+) on the front and a PassPort logic board on the back.

This huge (for what it does) chunk of C code running on its own dedicated processor is the reason why PassPort firmware upgrades take so long - it all has to go (slowly) through the main logic board.

All keep in mind you need two version of programming software - one for the conventional side and one for the passport side. Real pain to work with.

Is it impossible to change a kenwood tk-380 passport to LTR?

A PassPort TK-380 can be programmed for either PassPort or LTR or both (conventional too). The TK-380 requires 2 different software programs though, one for PassPort (KPG-63D) and one for LTR/conventional (KPG-49D).

How can you tell if the 380 is capable of LTR Passport?
