Augusta Council to talk public safety communications
AUGUSTA — The City Council meets Tuesday to hear an update on public safety radio communications and discuss a proposed zoning change.
Tuesday’s informational, nonvoting meeting takes place at 6:30 p.m. in council chambers at Augusta City Center.
In a joint state and city project, a new $320,000, 180-foot radio tower was built and installed on Granite Hill in Hallowell.
The tower replaces a 120-foot tower originally built for the Maine Turnpike Authority in 1956.
The new tower was built to provide broadcast facilities for radio signals for public safety responders in Augusta, including police, fire and ambulance.
The state has entered an agreement with the city of Augusta to allocate equipment to dispatch public works, fire and police services from the new tower. The tower will also serve the city of Hallowell, which contracts with Augusta for dispatch services.
Councilors are scheduled to receive an update on public safety radio communications at their meeting Tuesday.
Councilors are also scheduled to discuss a proposed zone change regarding signs.
