VHF Channel 90

I would like to listen to some of the charter fishing captains when down at the Chesapeake Bay. Several have VHF radios that use channel 90. Anybody have any idea what that frequency would be ? I can't find it on any database. Thanks...

And Channel 90 is what? 157.525 (undefined in FCC-search) is in Business (taxii/fire, etc)

Neither were in the marine band, and not part of any marine radio channel options.

According to the coast guard and my marine radio (Atlantis 250) there is no Channel 90, so I'm not sure what they may have been refering to.

There is indeed a marine channel 90 used internationally...it looks like the USA marine channels exclude some of the ones the rest of the world use?

Of course the VHF Channel 90 referred to might be a local name for just about anything...................

It probably is a local channel. Not sure why the US excludes some of the frequencies. That's weird that my radio dopesn't have a channel 90 in it. The highest it goes on International, US, or CAN is Ch. 88.

Channel 90 could possibly be an out of band frequency, or one, that the "in crowd" knows, that is a regular marine frequency. If you don't have the chart, or know the conversion code for the day or week, you will miss the comms.

VHF channel 90 is an international assignment and can't be used in U.S. waters. If vessels are using it in the Chesapeake Bay the operating illegal. I am not in the lower bay, but in the Northern Bay area and will have to put it in the scanner. I will be making a trip to the Ocean City, MD this weekend to visit my brother and will take a listen in that area. Readers of this Forum must remember that just because it is being used does not make it right. Many fishing vessels have used HF freqs outside of the HF-SSB Marine band in the past. 157.5225 is in the business band and licensed anywhere in the continental United States. This part of spectrum was in automotive band before consolidating services.

I have from time to time heard sport fishers on the nearby railroad frequency assignments and a couple of encrypted portables on a "splinter" frequency between standard assignments. Obviously nothing is legal but these guys figure that unidentified transmissions from non fixed locations are difficult to locate so they get away with it. There's lots of talk about "intruders" or "pirates" or whatever on HF but you'll find them everywhere thinking "legal" is what you can get away with.

In the Marine VHF world there are 3 basic setups in radios most often sold in the US / Can market today. The band plans are : US , Can , International. Depending where and how you set it up not all channels are the same. With the availability of new technology a new band plan has come about. This new band plan provides for splits between the present vhf marine channels. IT HAS NOT BEEN AUTHORIZED for use in the USA. There also is another possibility , among others, that these parties were using, as I do at times, radios that are capable of containing extra frequencies and in the programming “naming” them what they choose. I use marine radios of this type and am licensed to operate additional frequencies and in fact call them channel 90 etc. By the way I’m no where near you. At times we also use encryption . Another possibility is that commercial fisherman sometimes use HF radios and refer to some unauthorized HF frequencies as you have described. This often keeps the competition in the dark.. So many possibilities here….good luck and good monitoring.

And they do get away with it, so its working.

Channel 90 could also be referring to xxx.90 MHz
