Woman Injured After MARC Train Strikes Car in Rockville

http://www.wjla.com/news/stories/0509/621057.html

As posted on News 7 (Fri, 08 May 2009 23:27 -0400)
---------- - ---------- -

ROCKVILLE, Md. - A MARC commuter train struck a car in Rockville Friday evening, injuring the woman in the car.

Montgomery County police say 25-year-old Eda Valencia of Wheaton was taken to Washington Hospital Center. Sources say the seven month pregnant victim is expected to make a full recovery with no negative effects on her pregnancy.

Rescue crews were called to the scene near Randolph Road just before 5 p.m. Friday.

Police say Valencia's car was in traffic on the railroad track as the train, which was traveling northbound from Washington toward Brunswick, approached. Valencia tried to move her vehicle off the track, but it was hit by the train.

Her car spun several times and the railroad crossing arms broke through the windshield to the rear window.

Witness Rasheed Khadar says the driver's frantic attempts to drive off and avoid collision were unsuccessful. "You just hear a pop -- a lot of glass," he said.

"Usually when it's a train versus a car the train usually wins," said Pete Piringer, spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue.

No injuries were reported among the 540 passengers on the five-car train.

A Maryland Transit Administration spokesperson says the train involved was MARC Train 875 on the Brunswick Line heading outbound from D.C.

Cab driver Bill Fairer worries this will happen again. He says drivers routinely stop on the tracks in traffic, inviting disaster. "I'd say about once a week that I see somebody caught out there with the gates coming down," he said.

The Maryland Transit Administration says hundreds of passengers were delayed.
