Default Anyone heard of "PlateScan" ? Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR)

Anyone heard of PlateScan.. I saw it on the show "Jacked: Auto Theft Task Force

The law enforcement can drive through in real time and it will scan plates and run them for stolen vehicles etc. automatically..

Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR)

Platescan - Homepage

Any law enforcement in DC-Metro using it? I think some Montgomery County police vehicles have a front mounted cam on the interior facing forward but I'm not exactly sure if it is that..

Well i have heard some of the sheriffs on my scanner mention they are scanning a plate instead of running a plate. i have heard them say the system went down, or can i get the technical support # for this plate scan system or something like that. i started hearing things like this about 2 weeks ago. i just had thought it wasn't going to be available for sometime. guess not though.

VA State, PG Auto theft, and DC makes big use of them. DC... auto theft for recovering stolens, DPW for identifying boot eligible, and now talking about putting them on the street sweepers (may already be done) to issue tickets for street cleaning parking violations. Many many many users.

Yup, plenty of cities/towns use them for Parking Ticket Enforcement

Major Airports use them for Parking Lots/Garages [Logging in plates, for when you loose your ticket and claim only 1 day]

Police use if for Patroling and Ticket enforcement

Toll Booths as well, for enforcement and Stolen MV uses.

We used it back in the 90's here in MA for Vehicle Enforcement [Stolen vehicles] at one of our Toll Booths. Worked well [early versions]

It's not a whole lot of info on the technology, but there is a video that does explain what it does at this link below.

I have heard it in use once during a holiday weekend when Anne Arundel County Police were doing operations with MDTA.

They use it in Chicago for finding people with more than 1 unpaid ticket. You'll get a boot on your vehical till you pay. CLTV had a sort segment on this about 2 weeks ago.

As Dewey mentioned earlier, a system similar to it is used in DC to find repeat parking offenders and those who overstay parking limits residential areas. They use a tricked-out SUV with all kinds of sensors and cameras hanging about - not particularly stealthy.

PG uses it to tag cars for parking violations, MSP has several cars with two cameras mounted on the top of the car and use it in motion on the highway.
