Was passing by the Northeast (Cecil Co) MSP barrack today and noted a trailered Boston Whaler w/ Maryland State Police lettering and an MSP seal affixed. The only true MSP (as opposed to NRP) boats I'm aware of are the zodiacs, which are for STATE Team assaults. Anyone know the scoop on this?

I believe the boat is going to serve the purpose of water patrols like watching out for the Historic Lighthouses... On Second note, The DNR is going to be very busy
this year with comm.crabbers and stuff and not have enough time to perform water patrols...

Thanks Shipshark....will be great to figure this out. One possibility ....MSP does have its own dive team (as does NRP) and I would imagine that they would prefer to have their own boat for search/rescue operations, rather than having to rely on NRP for delivery. The MSP whaler could simply belong to that unit.

I checked MSP's web site, the media section and their newsletter....no mention of a boat, but lots of mentioning of marine duties all turned over to the Md Transportation Authority.....but perhaps they had some left over homeland security funds they had to use up......?

You know something you might have a point there because I remember about 2 or 3 months ago when MPT had the General Assembly proceedings on TV, Secretary Thomas Flanigan(MDOT) was speaking of having The Port of Baltimore and The Upper Chesapeake Bay Patrolled due to what these boats and barges are bringing in illegally...(something close to what I just posted)

One Question:

Why is it a Surprise that MSP has a Boat. They are the Law Enforcement Agency of all Law Enforcement Agencies in the State of Maryland. Just like someone posted before they have a Variety of Vehicles, from amphibious vehicles to atv's, boats, cars, helicopters, suv's, SWAT trucks.

Something that MSP doesnt have. Now that will surprise the Hell out of me.
Come on folks use some common sense.

Maybe they are getting boat ready for this coming Saturday as Chesapeake City has their annual Canal Days water fest Saturday.
A Mardi Gras type atmosphere with Boats,Booze,Babes,Beads etc.
Given the hot sunny forecast expect a record boating crowd.
I'm sure as usual Coast Guard,Marine Police and whatever will be out in the water. So many boats you can walk across the canal at times.
Gonna be a real zoo to police!

I suppose that you are correct, but I think many people are suprised by the notion because NRP is supposed to be the agency that does all of the marine related stuff.

I talked to my guy in the DNR. He says that the boat is probably for the MSP dive team and has not heard a thing about marine duties being given to them. In other news he also was able to supply me with a complete rundown of the portable radios which is 10 banks of 16 channels. ill submit it asap.

Thanks for the feedback from your DNR contact, Shipshark. Amazing how this thread took off w/ some interesting conjecture and even a mini- temper tantrum :) I'd presumed the NorthEast Brk Whaler would be for the MSP dive team - and it's about time they were properly served w/ a good vessel of their own. I used to run a multi-agency dive rescue unit and recall how poorly equipped the MSP divers were. Previously, they just had some small, zodiac-type crafts from the STATE Team depot at Waterloo Brk. Since the divers reside all over the state, I would hope they have finally secured the funds to base crafts all around the state to ensure better response times.

Mark, You mentioned hearing MSP on 37.42 - were you possibly hearing NRP/DNR? That has historically been one of their freqs and gets regular use.

You could be right Dave as I was just going by the RR database for Maryland which has it listed also as an MSP freq.
Coast Guard and DNR are using CH 83 Marine 157.1750 for talk coordinating heavy boat traffic now.Base is callsign Curtis Bay. This a Coast Guard vessel?

A Google search answered my own question as Curtis Bay is CG station Baltimore. Also heard them calling other CG auxillary boats on ch 83.
Must be several CG aux boats working Ches City.
Water Taxi and fuel dock on Ch 72.His fuel bill is $340.97 LOL..

I don't listen to the Coast Guard/Marine freqs very often but something you said Mark got me wondering. I do have the distress freq 156.80 programmed and hear both "Coast Guard, Baltimore" and Coast Guard, Curtis Bay" as IDs on various transmissions. Are they really one and the same?

Last night I happened to hear "Hampton Roads" on that freq. Reception from all over Virginia has been fantastic the past couple of nights.
