Default Ham freqs to monitor Louisiana

On what ham freqs can one in Maryland hear comms from Louisiana? Last night WUSA interviewed a guy in PG county who was asssisting in the rescue effort by relaying messages he received on his ham rig. I scanned the preset ham freqs on my BC 296 last night but heard nothing from LA. Could they be on 20 meters?

Dan, scanners are not a good tool to hear any of this traffic from the hurricane area. Here is a list of frequencies posted elsewhere, none of which can be heard with a 296:

14396.5 SHARES (very busy)
5211.0
11494.0 USCG Cothern
5732.0 USCG Cothern
7527.0 USCG Cothern (very busy)
7285.0 Ham Net
3873.0 Ham Net (very busy)
14265.0 Satern (Salvation Army) (very busy)

10.588 has also been heard FEMA.
7.632 USAF MARS.

Yes, and several ham nets on 40 and 75 meters apart from the SATERN net. Check Hugh Stegman's hurricane list or his website, both of which has the specifics.

Both are available from the utility Wiki 73s Mike

The following message was sent to me by "cohenner5377" to post:

There's been other frequencies noted as being used as well as these so
whoever's got an HF Rig out there, looks like you could have some
shortwave listening to do for a bit.

http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2005/08/30/1/?nc=1

The West Gulf Emergency Net remains active (7.285 MHz days/3.873 MHz
nights). A high volume of health-and-welfare requests initially slowed
passage of critical tactical and emergency traffic, so
health-and-welfare traffic is being moved to 7.290 MHz days/3.935 MHz
nights.

The Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network (SATERN) on 14.265 MHz
has been accepting and handling health-and-welfare inquiries on the air
and via its Web site. SATERN reports it received more than 700
health-and-welfare requests in the first 12 hours after Katrina hit. The
Salvation Army also is using Amateur Radio for its tactical
communications. SATERN says the health-and-welfare demand is so heavy
that it's threatening to overwhelm the Internet server.

Someone has put up a live feed. Credit to Dustin Childers of the Live Scanner Audio Board. An excellent feed for listening to events in LA. He is broadcasting from a portable with a wireless card, and has a capacity of 300 users (which, I understand at the moment is full). Link is here:

http://205.252.89.181:8000/live.m3u

You need to have WInamp to listen to the feed.

I'm sure that many of you have been checking the LA board regularly. Quite incredible to note the number of hospitals/medical centers outright assaulted and essentially held hostage today by heavily armed looters. FBI SWAT teams have been very busy choppering around, storming & retaking these facilities.

On the Louisiana forum there is a thread with a link to a live scanner feed from that area. I'm listening to it and the comms are mostly National Guard. Apparently, he can hear State Police but only when they use a specific tower. I'm hearing a "Pelican Base" which appears to be the governor's office. The other station is New Orleans EOC currently active.

[Edit] 2043: A call for priority medevac for 18 sick babies accompanied by doctors next to the Superdome on I-10. They also reported all overflights of the city of New Orleans have been grounded during hours of darkness for safety reasons. Wonder if they'll fly to pick up these babies. Something tells me they will.

That feed is great. I was locking in nicely for long stretches earlier this afternoon, but this evening it has been dropping off rather frequently. Are you having the same difficulty tonight, Al?

I absolutely am Dave. It'll run for 5-15 minutes and then die. There was one period when I couldn't log back on for about 15 minutes. For the past 30 minutes or so it has been steady for the first time this evening....until I just typed that and out it went....but back immediately. There has not been a whole lot of activity on it but what is there is interesting. The National Guard must be transmitting across all the towers because they are constant but I notice the State Police come and go as certain towers are switched on and off.

Oddly enough, when I stream the feed through "itunes" instead of other software packages, it seems to be maintained longer. I'm using the stereo feed... ({L} is the entire 800 system & {R} is LSP).

Every time I check the LA forum, it seems another feed has sprung up. Our friends in that state are doing a super job of keeping us tuned in.

I just changed to the feed you linked to Dave and I'll see what happens with that one. Thanks.

[Edit] I was using this one:
http://205.252.89.181:8000/live.m3u
and it's identical to the link you provided now that I've listened a bit. I'm still within WinAmp though and too lazy to try some other route.

This one is working beautifully.....much more than we had on the former.

{edit} ahh...OK....the one I was using previously was a mono feed and primarily included Nat Guard.

It hasn't stopped once since I changed to this new link you gave us. In that regard, it's much better. Funny, because the link I was using was direct to the guy providing it. Of course this could be a different source providing much the same info although a different originating source for the National Guard units. I do notice we're getting much more traffic though. It gets a tad difficult when both left and right speakers are going with different transmissions. But that's why we have two ears, right? And, yes, my other source was mono.

Yep - working nicely for me.....I had to drop the volume of the Left, since the LSP on the Right channel seems a bit more intriguing. Keeping both up at full volume feels just a bit schizophrenic

Hey, Al - bailout somewhere here in Balt Co....subject w/ a gun....MSP 39.44.....unsure where, precisely just yet. {edit} OK, 83 at Ruxton.

Yes, the left channel is about twice the volume of the right and I'm going to have to adjust that too for the reason you mentioned.

Baltimore County? Where's that? I was listening earlier to the MilAir but have the webcast scanner turned to minimum while I listen to this unbelievable traffic from NOLA...like the house looting going on at gunpoint with the inhabitants in them as was just reported.

Yes, I was hearing that, as well ! Got a kick out of the sheriff earlier who said he was going to go through "Hell & Highwater," if need be, to offload his 75 bus passengers - just wouldn't have had the same impact without the LA drawl......they can't find the suspects here in MD on 83, by the way.

And it's going to get more interesting now that they've shut down the Astrodome from taking any more people. Fire marshall is saying no more allowed. And they've got a 300 mile highway full of buses still on the way there. The shutdown has just happened in the past few minutes apparently. This is going to get ugly.
