Navy rebuilds practice target off coast
Updated: Monday, 02 Jan 2012, 8:20 AM EST
Published : Monday, 02 Jan 2012, 8:20 AM EST

STUMPY POINT, N.C. (AP) - Military helicopters and fighter jets are going to buzz an enemy target afloat in North Carolina's Pamlico Sound.

The Navy says it will resume training at a bombing range about nine miles from the town of Stumpy Point as early as Monday. It's the first time for the practice runs since Hurricane Isabel destroyed the target about eight years ago.

The Navy says the range will be used for target practice for machine guns from helicopters and light practice bombs from fixed-wing aircraft. High-explosive ordnance won't be permitted.

The Navy estimates the area will be used about 255 days a year, primarily during the week between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m.

The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk, Va., reported the range was first opened in 1959.

2048 local- One of the JENA flights (I'm assuming) calling one of our local airports on 136.275 in error thinking he was on the airports unicom freq, ID'd as CESSNA STATION AIR for touch-and-go. This is the 2nd time today I heard this. Earlier, one of the other aircraft told him he was on the wrong freq. Sounds like the same JENA guys that are in and out of Lakehurst NAS.

The a at 2056 local, JENA 24 (same guy) calling Lakehurst 127.775 for landing 12 miles out runway 24.

Just heard a female with Leesburg FSS 255.4. Comms were weak but she spelled out a callsign of DOG32. I think she said something about being at 4000ft.

Default Tacamo

Guys,

On 11175 KHz just heard unid acft (quite weak) tell unid ground station via phone patch that the wire was stuck out at 518 ft---it would not extend or retract and that they would stop at Dover if they had to. At 1417 they gave their position as ?? miles east of Sea Isle VORTAC. Ground station advises they may have to cut the wire but that decision is left up to the on-board personnel and the acft commander. Acft advises that there is hydraulic fluid splattered all over the wire housing area and it's puddling.

Would guess that this was the East Coast TACAMO out of PAX--never did hear any callsigns

SCORE81 was 167954. I was tracking it with ADS-B around as it headed back to Pax around 1800. Today is the first time it has displayed a SCORE callsign.
