Default update on St Marys County encryption - public forum

I have received supportive messages from several of the county commissioners in response to my letter asking for their help in ending full-time encryption of police radio traffic on the county's new P25 trunked system. The commissioners will be holding a public forum this Tuesday evening during which the issue of encryption on the new radio system will be discussed. They have invited those of us who care about this issue to attend the forum and speak. I will definitely be there, and I hope that many of you will join me. Please spread the word to anyone who may be interested.

The forum will be held on Tuesday, September 10 at 6:30 PM at the Northern Senior Center in Charlotte Hall.

..
Did anyone go to the public forum on the police use of full encryption? I work in a county near St. Mary's and, in spite of them being P25, we still can't communicate with them because they aren't sharing the encryption keys. It's really stupid.

It really offends me as a taxpayer since I live in St. Mary's county. Not because I can no longer listen, but because St. Mary's has well over a hundred cops from nearby jurisdictions living in St. Marys. These guys are a FREE resource to St. Mary's county as they travel throughout. To not allow them to communicate is beyond stupid.

It also offends me as a taxpayer, knowing the cost of a P25 Phase II system and knowing the county allegedly bought it to enhance interoperability. What a joke. If the surrounding counties, other state police barracks, the Natural Resource Police, Pax River Police and numerous federal agencies can't communicate with St. Marys within the boundaries of St. Mary's county, then interoperability is a pipe dream.

</rant.> sorry

Key management and interoperability do not go hand-in-hand. Routine channels should not be encrypted. Sensitive dispatching can be accomplished either by notebook terminals in vehicles, or by smart phones / pagers. Many Baltimore City officers carry pager-like devices that they can use to receive various messages, review photos, DL info, etc.

I would suggest that if anyone has concerns about this that they send a letter or email to the County Commissioners. A few seem receptive to going back to the way it used to be. Only used for high risk situations like narcotics or SWAT. If you don't speak up then you will be stuck with it!
