Default State Police Lingo

I've been listening to Mass State Police for a bit now, and I've got the hang of their 10-codes, use of "BDL" to mean "breakdown lane," and their constant use of the phrase "make the flip." A few things still elude me:

- What is an IRO? I hear them requested often, but there's never been enough context for me to guess what they mean.

- Often, in response to an accident, they'll say they're "going to book it," or ask the dispatcher to "save me a spot in the book." What exactly are they referring to? The terminology sounds different from when they're arresting someone or issuing a summons, so I don't think it means "booking" in the classic police sense.

- It seems pretty routine to call in a traffic stop and ask that the plate be run, and then they'll give the operator's info and ask that it be run, too. It seems like all cruisers have MDTs, and it sounds like officers have the ability to do these lookups themselves. Is it just a matter of convenience that the officers have the dispatcher look people up, or do officers not have full MDT capabilities?

Thanks for all the help!

I'm not sure if that's how the Mass State Police use it. They request that an IRO be dispatched to the scene to assist, so I think IRO is some form form of public safety officer.

our cops do the same 27/29 check, guessing dispatchers can run far more agencies and warrants db's than the cars do

Incorrect. The IROs are tow trucks or service units on the Mass Pike sections within the city of Boston. That includes the Ted Williams Tunnel, turnpike extension, and I-93 tunnels in Boston. I forget what the acronym stands for. The registered operated is indicated a the owner.

My guess is that they ask the dispatcher to run the plate or driver so that they can keep their eyes on them and not have to pay attention to the computer. Since MA troopers generally ride alone, their first priority is to make sure that they can address any potential threats.

IRO stands for Incident Response Operations.

Default Turnpike and Troop E Lingo

I.R.O.'s Incident Response Operators, (aka tow truck/flatbeds) Units
assigned to the Tunnels, (Sumner, Callahan, Ted Williams) as well as I-93N/S & I-90 to/from Route 1A and Exit 24 E/W. These units can tow, provide limited repair services but do not provide gas.

E.S.P.'s Emergency Service Patrols These units repair, provide gas, but
don't tow but have push bumpers to relocate disables in the travel lanes.

This should give you a better understanding of where things are. Some of
these "ramps" are very short and merge into other ramps. Signage for all of these designations are posted at the beginning of the ramps with a 0.0 mile maker designation. Additional signage is place on the walls of the ramps and tunnels.

Spot it the Book = Daily Journal also can be known as the arrest log.
Agencies keep these as some of the info is a Public Record [consult the Secretary of State for the legal issues]

Not all cruisers have MDT's [It's called a budget Crisis]

You will notice that all Radio inquiries for Teletype info go thru the Troop HQ [which is staffed by Dispatchers] vs the Individual Barracks [Uniformed Desk Officers]

Thanks!

Are IROs and ESPs state-operated, or are they contracted out? I don't recall having seen state-owned tow trucks, though I'm only on 93 for a few miles.

Are ESPs the help vans sponsored by an insurance company? I think they're called "Help Vans," but I'm not sure if they're synonymous or not.

Yes - Mass Turnpike

Help Vans, former CVS Samaratans are now Commerce Ins sponsored.

I'm not sure why it would need to be put into a wiki, run it by Scott at SNE first. Road maps are road maps.

IRO's were operated by the Turnpike Authority so I would assume they are now operated by MassDOT. They are all flatbed tow trucks that will tow you off to the nearest exit where you can make your own arrangements or they will call the contacted tow company for you. They operate on the MSP Trunk OCC Truck group

ESP's were operated by the Turnpike Authority so again I assume MassDOT took over the operation of them with Commerce Insurance footing the bill. The can change a tire, provide air, provide gas or push you off the roadway and call a contracted tow truck. They operate on MSP E-PTL1` and 2. Their ID's are all X00.

Motorist Assistance Vans are run by contracted companies (Export Towing and Ted's of Fayville) with Commerce covering the costs. They can do limited repairs along with gas, tire changes and push bar to get you off the road. I've also seen a flatbed tow truck in the Newton area. They operate on MSP's regular T/G's with the ID's being 52XX. Both companies also provide the drivers with Nextel's
