Local story, I monitor the agency involved. This story would have had a more tragic outcome if encryption was used.

Jonathan S. Dawe Sr., 37, of 20 A St., a former call firefighter in town, heard the call on a police scanner at his house and rushed to the pond, about three-quarters of a mile away.

He jumped into the water and began pulling ashore a boy he described as “lifeless.” Police Detective Sgt. John Ouillette and Patrolman Matthew Leonard arrived and prepared to jump into the water.

A few counties away from me a guy robbed at gunpoint a pharmacy for oxycotton. A sheriff deputy 30 miles from the robbery heard the call on his scanner at home. A few hours later, on duty now, he spots the car and arrests the robber. Another reason not to encrypt for normal traffic.
