Mexican army dismantles gang's antennas, radios - December 1, 2011

MEXICO CITY — Mexican army troops dismantled a telecommunications system set up by organized crime in four northern states, authorities said Thursday.

The Defense Department said soldiers confiscated 167 antennas and 166 power supplies that gang members used to communicate among themselves and to monitor military movements.

The operation also netted more than 1,400 radios and 2,600 cellphones in the border states of Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon and Coahuila and in the state of San Luis Potosi, a statement said.

Stolen? I doubt it, these cartels are making BILLIONS in profit each year. El Chapo Guzeman, a cartel leader is on the forbes 400 richest people in the world list. They can afford whatever they want.

Borderland Beat one of the best sources for whats going on in Mexico.

The Mexican could get smart and sell all of the epuipment to auctions in the U.S. And can be used by undercover police, vol firefighters, businesses, radio operators, and whatnot... Although there is a possibility that it could end up back in Mexico. But its just a thought...

Yes. They can use it to their advantage in capturing these people. Listen in on their conversations and gather intelligence to get ready to move in on them.

I highly doubt it. These cartels didn't get rich by being that stupid. They'll change their comms ops quick. I hate to say it, but they may be violent narco traffickers, but don't underestimate the intelligence and tactical abilities of these people.

Also, agreed. That's no FRS gear. That's some high-end equipment. Those cans and towers would support a pretty decent repeater. They weren't messing around.

I was watching some videos on Youtube and several showed whoever was riding shotgun on the military pickups with beaten up portables listening to the "halcones" communicate their movements.

They've also gone high tech and issued Nextels to all their halcones to report movements of the Federal Forces. A lot of people ditched theirs because every time there's an operation against a high profile target the Nextel network is jammed by the government to disrupt their communications, not to mention the fact that it's a real pain to obtain one as a law-abiding citizen yet criminals seem to have no issues obtaining them, among other things. On the other hand, their data isn't so slow over there. But I've seen photos of the caches the Army has confiscated and sometimes they find tubs of i355 and i530 phones during a single operation.

Mexico finds cartel radio network, 300-foot tower - Sep 28, 2012

Mexican navy personnel say they have found a radio communications network operated by a drug cartel, complete with a 300-foot (90-meter) transmission tower.

The navy says the radio equipment and several towers were found in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz. The system reached into the neighboring state of Tamaulipas.
