THE BARRY COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT REGRETS TO ANNOUNCE THE OFF DUTY DEATH OF DEPUTY CHRIS YONKERS. DEPUTY YONKERS RECEIVED FATAL INJURIES IN A MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT WHEN AN ONCOMING VEHICLE TURNED IN FRONT OF HIM ON M-43HWY IN CARLTON TWP. THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED ON OCTOBER 17 AT APPROXIMATELY 22OOHRS. DEPUTY YONKERS WAS A 12 YEAR VETERAN OF THE BARRY COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT. FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS HAVE NOT BEEN FINALIZED AND WILL BE POSTED AS SOON AS THEY ARE KNOWN.

BARRY COUNTY, Mich. (WOOD) - Justin Malik was arraigned Monday for negligent homicide in the death of Barry County Sheriff's Deputy Chris Yonkers in October 2008.

Malik, 24, faces charges of driving with a suspended license and operating a vehicle while impaired causing death. Malik allegedly was drunk when he hit the motorcycle Yonkers was driving and working undercover at the time of the crash.

His preliminary exam is set for January 14.
