Firefighter, driver injured in crash
SHELBY TOWNSHIP — A township firefighter and a 65-year-old Shelby Township woman were injured in a crash Oct. 22 after the woman tried to squeak by on the right-hand side of a fire truck headed to an emergency.
Police Chief Robert Leman said the truck was headed southbound on Schoenherr Road on its way to a car fire when it tried to turn right to head westbound on 23 Mile Road.
“Because of the size of the fire truck, they have to make a wide, sweeping turn,” Leman said. “She went into the curb lane and tried to go around them,” and actually ran into the side of the truck.
The woman and a firefighter complaining of shoulder pain were taken to Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Clinton Township. Neither had life-threatening injuries.
Leman said the accident is still under investigation, but the woman will likely face charges of failing to yield to an emergency vehicle.
