UPDATE: South Rockwood, Mich. -- Residents in South Rockwood were told to stay indoors after a barricaded gunman shot a police officer Monday.

Police said Cpl. Thomas Murphy was shot around 10:30 a.m. at a home near Carleton-Rockwood and Armstrong roads.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Department is assisting in the investigation.

Murphy was shot in the side.

He was transported by Survival Flight to the University of Michigan hospital in Ann Arbor.

The officer is in STABLE CONDITION.

Residents who live in the area said police told them it was a barricaded gunman and were told to stay inside their homes.

SWAT team members broke a window just before noon and threw a tear gas canister into the home hoping to get the gunman to come out.

Police said the gunman was found dead inside the home.

Actually it was not Survival Flight nor University of Michigan. He was airlifted via MEDFLIGHT and flown into St.Joseph Hospital in Ypsilanti. Listed in stable condition pending surgery.
