Search For Man Who Fled Police Car Is Under Way

ROYAL OAK, Mich. -- Five Royal Oak schools are on "alert status," which is a step down from a lockdown, while police look for a man who jumped out of a police car on Woodward and ran.

School officials said nobody is allowed to enter or exit the following schools:

# Jane Adams Elementary
# Northwood Elementary
# Alfred E. Upton Elementary
# Royal Oak Middle School
Royal Oak High School

All of the schools are near the area where the man fled from police.

Police said a man jumped from a police car when it stopped at a traffic signal on 13 Mile and Woodward roads.

Investigators believe the man may be armed and is moving to the west side of the city.

Police are actively searching near 13 Mile and Coolidge roads.

Police have not said why the man was in police custody.

How does an armed man get into a police car without the officer knowing? What sort of handcuff usage allows a man to be able to jump out? Why wouldn't the officer take the gun away before putting him in the car? All seems a little strange...

Now what i seen on ch 4 news it was a traffic stop a man in that car bolted on foot (from that car) not a squad car a gun was found in the car. some freqs in use 155.010 Royal Oak pd Skyfox 166.250. Police are giving the ok to clear some schools at this time.
