Default Detroit Fire Live Audio Feed (500+ Listeners)

Folks, we've seen a HUGE influx of listeners for DFD since yesterday... is something big going on? Did we receive some local press?

Detroit is infamous for arsons on Halloween weekend "Devil's Night" going back to the 70s. Given the current economic situation, which has hit Detroit ultra-hard, officials are bracing for the worst this year. I believe they have something on the order of 100,000+ foreclosed and abandoned homes in the city currently.

Hmmm.. that makes sense. Thanks Chauffeur...

However, the increased traffic is abnormal. We're talking a feed that has ~20 listeners on average now gone to 500 listeners. I've got to think there is some press *somewhere* that is driving the listeners. I like to try to keep on top of these things to understand how folks make it to us, but this one still has me confused.

we have over 200,000 members on this site devils night is well known. I don't think it's unusual to have so many listening at all.

CNN had an article on Detroit Devil's Night posted earlier today.

The fact that they have a link to the feed on detroitfirefighters.net probably helps a bit. Ordinarily I'd agree that the increased traffic is unusual, however given the history up there, I'm surprised it's only 420 listeners currently.

I think we found the source. I'd bet the CNN article directed a lot of folks to the Detroit FF site, which has prominent direct links to our feeds. Time to scale up for the demand tomorrow.

It looks like CNN was linking to a Time article. Try this:

Can Detroit Prevent a Return of 'Devil's Night'? - TIME

Tonight is Devil's Night - so tomorrow should be much quieter (from a demand and from a fire perspective.)

I don't see a link to the RR audio - is it hidden in there?

The article doesn't actually mention RR, but I imagine if someone saw the article they might go to RR to listen to the live feed.

That doesn't sound likely... I'd bet most of these are just Michiganders who know about tonight combined with a few RRers who noticed it shoot to the top

Seems like I'm getting cut out a little more frequently over the past hour.

Overall seems fairly quiet, I was expecting a little more action since it's VERY warm out (temps in the 70's this evening!)

Detroit Fire Department actuality uses the term "Devils Night Holiday" (or something like that) referring to 3 nights... 1 before and 1 after the 31st. The citizens will still honor the holiday tonight and tomorrow night so it will still be good listening tonight, not that every night isn't let alone a weekend.

I didn't get to listen listen night... any thing out of the ordinary??

I lived in Detroit in the 80s when this reached a peak of 100+ fires. I now live about 35 miles north of the city.

This problem has really almost gone away because of all the volunteers that help patrol the city the 2 nights before Halloween.

The national media likes to make negative stories where there are none.

There was an article in the Detroit Free Press this week about live scanner streaming:

Most of action is taking place on the Detroit P25 trunk system. Fire task force, gang squad and police curfew enfocement details. The streaming audio is just fire dispatch main channel and not some of the better talk groups.

More encryption being used this year.

On Friday night, Battalion Chief 9 Greg Best said: "It's pretty much been normal. ... It seems like the arsonists are getting smarter. They're out there the three or four days before everybody's out there patrolling."
