Flint PD holding auction/garage sale to raise funds

FLINT, Michigan -- The police department isn't usually the place to go to pick up a brand new roasting oven, tennis racket or pair of shoes.

But on Saturday, garage sale aficionados will want to be at the Flint Police Department's Impound Lot on North Saginaw Street for the Mega Garage Sale.

• The vehicle viewing begins at 9 a.m. Saturday with the auction starting at 10 a.m. A $120 deposit is required to join the auction. The deposit will be used toward the purchase of a vehicle or returned if no purchase is made.

• The garage sale begins at 9 a.m. and there is no entry fee.

• Both events are at the Flint Police Department Impound Lot, 2712 N. Saginaw St.
Along with the auction of more than 220 vehicles, the department will sell off items found in autos forfeited in drug cases or impounds.

Items range from tools, which cost $1 for four items, to strollers for $5 each to speaker boxes at $50 each.

The miscellaneous items usually were included with the sale of the vehicles they were in, said Acting police Chief Gary Hagler.

But, when looking through the items, police officials decided they could make a little extra cash.

"This action is bigger because there are more items," Hagler said. "We cleared out the warehouse and the drug forfeiture (items)."

The separate auto auction has a variety of vehicles from pickup trucks to motorcycles.

One of the best items, according to police, is a 1969 Chevrolet Chevell SS 396, which still runs.

Officials are hoping the classic car will bring in big bucks.

Profits from the garage sale and auction will go to the department's drug unit, as well as operations of the city jail.
