The Michigan State Police post in Bay City, built in the 1930s, may be relocating to Williams Township as part of a $5 million project.

State Sen. Jim Barcia,

D-Bay City, announced the possibility Friday at a Bay Area Chamber of Commerce legislative luncheon.

Barcia said the post could become the new Third District headquarters for the State Police, also housing the six-county BAYANET drug task force.

Eventually, the State Police could relocate its crime lab from Bridgeport to the new facility, representing an additional investment of $15 million to

$18 million, Barcia said.

The current post is at 405 N. Euclid Ave. but ''its condition is poor at best,'' Barcia said. Dedicated in 1935, it is ''drastically outmoded,'' and wouldn't even pass current electric codes, he added.

Barcia has requested the $5 million to build a post as part of a capital outlay project in the state's budget.

He said the money could be appropriated as soon as this fall, and leaders in the House and Senate have expressed support.

''It's not an absolute, but it's a top priority for me to get this done,'' Barcia said.

The new post would be built on about 50 acres of land at US-10 and M-47.

The property is owned by Dow Corning Corp., which has its corporate headquarters near the intersection.

The land likely would be donated, said Jarrod Erpelding, a Dow Corning spokesman.

The senator said the

property under consideration is currently vacant, but has access to highways and is centrally located in the Third District.

Williams Township is ''very supportive'' of locating a post there, said Supervisor Tom Paige.
