Pro - 528 and APCO - 25 M.P.S.C.S.
Pro - 528 and APCO - 25 M.P.S.C.S.
Hello My name is Brian Carr, I live in Genesee County MI. I recently purchased the Pro - 528 handheld scanner and I am having several problems programming.
I have put in all the talkgroup (trunked) fequencies and all of the talkgroup ID's. I have the system programed to E-2 800 - Motorola Type II and I still do not recieve any traffic. I am not familiar with all the new added functions on the Pro-528, But I have programmed the Pro 2096 desktop (which I own) and have had no problems monitoring the same frequencies.
The Genesee County system is an APCO-25 M.P.S.C.S. system.
I am not sure why I am not recieveing any traffic?
I also have purchased the 800 MHz antenna for the 528.
If there is anyone who could help that would be great. I love learning the new technology.
Thank you,
Brian Carr

According to what I have read, the pro-528 is analog only and is not able to handle the digital signals used by MPSCS.

Return the 528
Brian:
Pack up the 528 in the box it came in, and take it back to the Shack.
You need a digital scanner if you live in Michigan.
(and nobody pipe in and say there are still a few analog systems around. That's true, but don't get anal).
On the top of this page, click on the Wiki tab.
On the right side of the page that comes up, you'll see "digital trunktrackers". Click on that for a list of the scanners you want to buy. I have the Pro-96, others here like the Pro-106. Both are good radios. Use the money from the return of the 528 towards the purchase of the right scanner. Find the manager, tell him or her you want the scanner for the last sales price. A manager can do that if they want, even if it's not still on sale.
And find the clerk that sold you the 528 in the first place, and slap 'em until your arm get's tired. He or she knew better.

Yeah thanks, after doing some research I found out that it was analog... I cant beleive that they still shelf analog scanners in Michigan... I did return it, but beleive it or not they did not have any digitals in stock... I do have the base station pro-2096, but I would like to have a handheld... I am going to try and see if maybe someone would like to trade it for a handheld. Not sure how to go about that yet. But the base scanner is brand new...
Anyways, thanks for the reply.

Ananlog will be here for a while. I can pick up an analog for under $200 and all Digitals are over $400. For example, Kent county is 100% analog. only MSP working the highways are on Digital so to save over $200 to go with an analog is smart.

Well, let's see here. Here's a cut-n-paste from RR's database for Genesee County:
"All Genesee County police and fire departments, except Flint City, are on the MPSCS. This also includes all Sheriff's Department operations, MSP, F.A.N.G., Parks & Recreation, Bishop International Airport Authority and Animal Control."
Yeah, Skud, great advice for the newcomer. Tell Brian, who lives in Genesee County "to save over $200 to go with an analog is smart".
