Shame on the passenger for not being belted in. He's lucky to have survived the crash.

I know Im gonna get flammed for this...
The passenger got what he had coming. I feel bad on the extent of the injuries, but thats what happens when you dont wear a seat belt.
It amazes me on how many people in Emergency Services field dont wear thier seat belts. They obviously know better, know the consequences and should set an example. I hope he gets a no-seatbelt ticket for it too.
I wonder if the Dept's insurance is gonna cover the hospital bills, being that he didnt wear it. Most insurance companies automatically deny you now due to that.
The roads were bad today. I dont know if the driver should of got a ticket tho, as sometimes you cant prevent that kind of accident on ice, and he was responding to help someone.

The driver of the tanker maybe could have verified the passenger was belted but I'm in agreement with you. Its ashame he was injured & hopefully he will recover but theres been enough attention paid to this sort of stuff. I wonder was the seat belt damaged or inoperative on the tanker, then it should be on the dept to have resolved that issue.

Hell, when I was a volunteer firefighter/EMT back in the late 90's we used to get frequent calls to a ski lodge for injuries. I remember one such call during a snow storm, the roads were crappy. We got toned out to the ski lodge for a subject with a possible broken leg. 3 of us got in the rescue vehicle (it was like an ambulance). My Lieutenant was driving and the Sgt. was riding passenger, I jumped in the back and we start driving, probably a little too fast for what was a priority 2 run with ski patrol already rendering first aid and Paramed responding. I could feel we weren't getting good traction and my Lieutenant yells back to me "Lay flat on the floor if we start sliding!" Some risk comes with the job, but I didn't have a seat or a seat belt to wear otherwise I would have had it on. It didn't bother me at all, I was a young adrenaline junkie back then.
