Question MPSCS Base Scanner Suggestions?

Im new to the Kalamazoo Michigan area, and I'm looking for a Base/Desk top scanner that will decode MPSCS (Project 25). I'm looking for a Radio Shack or Uniden model with text tags at a reasonable price. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Question Base Scanner ?

Dennis,
I live in Shiawassee cnty. we have P-25 system in our area. I have a GRE, PSR-600 base scanner, I also have the PSR-500 handheld and just got a "SHACK" PRO-106, also a handheld.
The GRE & Radio Shack are the same radios, Just sold under different names( GRE makes them both)
The Radio Shack base is the PRO-197. My scanners preform very well in my area with the P-25 system.
Keep in mind that different areas may have very different results of one scanner to another. My neighbor has Uniden scanners and my GRE's out preform his by a long shot. He can take his to work with him and they preform very well.
A digital scanner will cost you aprox. $500, Radio Shack has a sale going on now until Sept 5, I believe, the PRO-197 is $399. That sale is the resson I got the PRO-106 only $379
I did extensive research on digital scanners before I bought my first one.

Good Luck in your quest for the perfect scanner

Danny

Dennis,

Just to let you know, you won't be able to monitor much in K-zoo County as the lion's share of it is encrypted as is neighboring Calhoun Co.

Alot in the city of Kalamazoo is encrypted, but the county is still in the clear digital.

I also agree that the current GRE, RS, or Uniden digital scanners should do just fine, but they aren't cheap.

Thanks to all. The sale price was my final decision maker on the PRO-197. Just got it programmed and so far so good!

What does the PRO-197 give you for MPSCS etc that the PSR600 does not. I am looking for an MPSCS system when I go north at times. Does Rad-Shack do layaway programs anymore.

Thanks.

Maybe it is worth the savings to get this base unit.

The PRO-197 and PSR-600 are basically the same. GRE manufactures both, and puts Radio Shack's name on the faceplate and in the firmware of the PRO-197. The PSR-600 comes with the USB programming cable, the PRO-197 does not. The PRO-197 comes with a printed manual, the PSR-600 comes with a CD-ROM with the manual in PDF format, plus a simple basic remote-control application. Programming, operation, and performance are the same.
