Ypsilanti Man Fires at Passing Chase
Video
Another reason why so many departments scream for encryption. It only takes one idiot to ruin it for everyone.

Even if it was - is it okay for someone to listen on their scanner and shoot at a passing car? I don't get the difference?

If you read the first part of the original post this is what it says (Another reason why so many departments scream for encryption) RADIO and that is what I am referring to! Now you can make any thing out of what I wrote But I never said it was ok to shoot at any thing or one!
Thanks freqs for more information it would have helped if that was in the first post.

Check again - the link is still active, and the reporter clearly states that the guy was listening to his scanner.

Nope, and most chases aren't broadcast on MI tv, unlike CA. There was one high profile chase in Aug. though that ended up in a fiery crash on live tv, but that's one of the only ones I remember them showing. This guy, from FOX 2, and other sources say he was drunk and listening to a scanner and decided he could help when he heard the chase was approaching. I could see many departments, and have heard first hand from the former YPD chief that he hates scanners, and wishes for encryption. Incidences like these will only further push other departments to enable encryption when they switch over to the MPSCS if they haven't done so already. Though, budget issues might be the final say in all of that.

Well, I wouldn't be surprised if they pushed for encryption.Unfortunately, this idiot will give the chiefs good reason to do so.

I love listening to PD's but if I cant blame them for wanting to be encrypted, no reason they shouldn't be.
Anyone know the cost difference for the encrypted radios?

Here is my opinion.... Scanners have nothing to do with anything! It is the idiot that thinks they have to get involved in something they shouldn't. That is just stupid and it could happen with or without the scanner!
They should have arrested the guy for being a bad shot!
Police don't need encryption unless of coarse they are trying to hide something.. Scanners can work more to the advantage of police than against..

While I agree with the rest of your post, this line doesn't seem to be correct... If 1) the guy didn't have a scanner or 2) they were encrypted -- this would never have happened. So open scanning is at the heart of this issue.

Well Rob that is your opinion and nothing more.... So don't say mine is incorrect.

What if the guy just happen to be sitting on his front porch (with no scanner), and heard/saw the chase coming down the street, and took his shot?
