For those of you in the Traverse area - it's time to see if any users read the newsletter since we're all here for the fall homeland security summit...

I'd bet most of them don't even think about it - they probably have those talkgroups on their mobile rig and it's just there when they turn on the car.

Or let me put it this way - I've seen zero people walking around with a portable, let alone listening to one, in the conference areas.

That was an interesting article on the situation in Kent County. So essentially the same thing could happen in GT county if all attendees do not change there radios to STATW(TG)?? I am a learn as you go with the systems and technology mostly from what I read and learn on this forum. A piece of information that was missing from the write up is that currently as far as MPSCS is concerned not much is being used in Kent County, yes DNR and MSP but not the sheriff, the city etc. If they were using it would the outcome have been diffferent where that locally all communications would have been tied up?? If this answer is true then is it safe to assume that making sure each individual with a radio manually changes there radios to STATW(TG) is something of a wrong way to fix a current problem. As far as the get together in GT County, what actually takes place at these events. Lastly if the issue comes up in GT County like it did in Kent County A) will we know it and B) will they tell us if it does.

Too late - it already happened. As to the conference info - the info is at MSP Emergency Management Redirect

You'll know it's happening when you hear a large number of non-typical talkgroups on your tower. Check the archives here, it comes up about every 6 months.

Many local talkgroups simply go dead when you go out of your home range, but some are not configured that way.

Even if they change their radio, they still have to make sure it is not set to scan.

Scan feature doesnt allow the radio to affiliate with the tower, once the radio leaves the home area the channel wont be carried to the next site unless the radio is switched to that talk group.
