I got an e-mail from a person who lives in Imlay City. Karen was telling me that she stopped in to the Radio Shack store in Lapeer to buy some electronic parts, and there were two customers asking questions as to why their scanners went dead. One had a Pro-2096, and other was holding a Uniden 396 handheld unit. The person at the counter was telling that because they went to a new digital radio system, they would have to upgrade to new scanners.

Then after both persons walked out of the store, the manager was talking to his sales assistant and said, "If we tell them all they need to do is just reprogram their scanners, they would expect us to do it for them. Even if I knew how, I wouldn't bother." This goes to show you the attitude of these people who work at Radio Shack these days. So much for customer service in 2012.

Ron, as for re-programming, I re-installed the V-Scanner folder for Michigan that is stored in the scanner. Right now it stops on a talk group and is wanting to talk but it is acting like it needs a better antenna. I have my 800MHz antenna on it. I also found out I can install a firmware upgrade which I downloaded. I just need to get my hands on a USB pc to scanner cable. I don't want to go buy a new $40.00 cable got one use. I need to find one of the guys that has one I can borrow. Shoot,I would even bring my laptop and scanner and do it at their house. As a side note, I was at my son't today and with the standard antenna on his he was picking up MPSCS and sometimes Lapeer in the middle of Flint. He put my 800MHz antenna on and it was like night and day better reception for him. He has a newer PRO-96 he got in 07 with the updated firmware.

Updated firmware makes a major difference in the reception of Project 25 trunking systems. The newer the upgrade, the better your radio will sound. Sadly, I don't know of anyone who has a cable for a Pro96 laying around. With Lapeer County being a simulcast system, finding the best location in your house is key to enjoying good reception.

Does anyone know how to make the Audio Feeds Stereo? what do I need? I was thinking of changing both feeds i would move Lapeer Co. PD and Lapeer Co. amateur radio to one audio feed and the other one will be Lapeer Co. Fire/EMS digital and Fire/EMS tones/pager analog. So it would be 4 scanners on the two feeds.

OK, I am going to break down and get another scanner. Will the Radio Shack PRO 106 digital work with all of the MPSCS as well as the new Flint and Lapeer systems? This is made by GRE and is supposedly identical to the GRE-PSR 500. Thanks.

Default T/G label on FD prep

Looked at a family members Lapeer Co FD prep on Christmas eve. Very cool. Labeling on the T/Gs are different than what is stated in the data page of R&R. It is labeled for Central Dispatch for the FD as "44FCNT", LCEMS is 44ECNT. Thought I would just pass that along.

The data page is usually a little more descriptive. I like seeing the actual tag in the comments area, but that's where scanners excel with a larger screen.

OK, a friend from my Lapeer HAM club loaned me the Radio Shack USB PC to scanner cable. I uploaded the DSP 1.4 upgrade but I am still not getting anything but the occasional static when a talk group wants to lock on. I re-installed the Michigan V scanner file. Is there a different set of frequencies I should install?

Reception in areas like Lapeer will be poor often due to the simulcast nature of CQPSK. Your best bet is to change locations. If it is getting any TGs at all, it is not a programming issue.

This is just an occasional lock on a talk group and static. It's also usually locked on a Genesee County talk group. I just can't figure out why up till about 3 weeks ago I could pick up all of the MPSCS talk groups with just some getting static. I have the 800MHz antenna on it.

If its static it may be encrypted.

I don't think so. My son has a newer (by 2 years than mine) PRO-96 and the same talk groups come in just fine on his.

I've put all of these TG in my PSR800 and the only ones I pick up on a regular basis are the known TG 44P911, 44F911, LCEMS primary and secondary. I have not had a single hit on any of the unknown TG. (I created a separate system for Lapeer with the Lapeer and St. Clair Co simulcasts. Scanning from Port Huron.) I'll keep monitoring and try to ID the unknowns, but like I said before I'm not hearing any coms on those TG. Could it be because I'm so far away those TG are not affiliating with the St. Clair Co simulcast and I'm just not hearing them? Has anyone else heard anything on those TG? According to the Lapeer 911 website they have 74 active TG. I'm sure they are using more than just what is listed in RR. Thanks.

It could be that most of these talkgroups are staying on the Lapeer County Simulcast System. Sadly, we haven't received any major talkgroup submissions from Lapeer County. Therefore, what you see in the database, is what we have so far.
