What type of encryptions are there

I was wondering how many different types and forms of encryptions there are, i herd encryption i beleive on a michigan state police talkgroup and then again on a dnr talkgroup and i was wondering what would it take to scan it and what system are they using ?

If it is encrypted, don't bother trying.

If it is just digital, then have fun.
