Default Wurtsmith Air Base in Oscoda, Michigan?

What ever became of Wurtsmith Air Base in Oscoda, Michigan? I remember years ago it was closed as a military air base. Then I heard talk of making it into a prison. The last I heard, American Airlines was going to buy it, and use it as a repair depot for commercial jets.

Default Wurtsmith

Several small industries have taken over many of the larger buildings, with the largest being utlized by an aircraft maintainence company. The airlines backed out on their plans to take over the airfield. Overall, the place has done rather well considering the possible economic impact they faced.

Kalitta Air, based out of Ypsilanti, Mich. has their main repair facilities up at Oscoda for their 747s. They own around 25 747s, 10 737s, and one DC-9 that are flown all over the country and overseas. Connie Kalitta purchased most of the facilities at the old AFB, and uses the engine repair facility to perform contract work for other airlines, which consists of an engine repair, replacement, and total overhaul facilities. Likewise, many of his workers stay in the old barracks for several weeks and return home for a few weeks at a time.
