First off, get the book "Now You're Talking"... makes a GREAT reference (after 10 years, I still look back)

If you are comfortable with electronics, check online, they have the question pools for training and testing (500 questions in the pool, you get about 50) and study them.
Get in touch with the local Amareur Radio group. If you monitor your local repeater, you will hear during a weekly net the date and time of the local meeting (This is how I started) head to the meeting, introduce yourself, and let them know that you are interested in getting your license
