Default D.C. Cook heard on MPSCS

I heard D.C. Cook Nuclear Plant Unit 1 and control room Friday night at about 0430. They were on Statewide 5, calling for "Regional Dispatch Area 5" for a radio check. I found this interesting, as I thought they communicated with the state via secure phone line.

Does anybody know how long they've had MPSCS capability? Do they plan on going on MPSCS full time? I'd imagine they would eventually get a full-time encrypted MPSCS talkgroup.

I have heard them in the past on Statewide 5 around a year ago, doing a radio check with Station 50 in Paw Paw. Moreover, they do have secure phone lines, but also have MPSCS radios to intercommunicate with first responders should an "event" happen at their facility. This was done through local emergency preparedness planning, and more so since Berrien County is on the MPSCS as well.

Ah, that makes sense. But even with their training drills involving other agencies, which they have had quite frequently lately, they weren't anywhere on MPSCS. I only heard business as usual on their UHF security freq.

Did you listen to the I-TAC channels? Sometimes they are used when such an event takes place.

Are the I-TAC channels conventional or on MPSCS?

Has anyone heard anything on these channels? I've had them programmed in for sometime now and have never heard a peep.

They aren't used often, but as Ron said they are used.

I have heard them from time to time. Mostly short range communications, although the MPSCS has repeaters for ICALL on most of their towers in the state and repeaters on one of the I-TAC channels in the Detroit Metro area( I-TAC1 IIRC).

A lot of the time, some of the local departments will use the I-TAC channels for short range talkaround comms on simplex. Unless you are very close by, you won't hear them at all.

The I-TAC are supposed to be shut off when not used. Most are wirelined to the dispatch consoles. They can hear a unit calling in and when the dispatch speak the station wakes up the tx'er.

Now the repeater is repeating instead of just receiving. They are then supposed to shut off the tx'er when they are done with it.

The PL is 156.7
